My new custom built computer has been suffering from random freezing since the day I first powered it on. Have tried installing different drivers, updating BIOS, doing MEMTEST86, changing Windows power saving settings, run CHKDSK but nothing has helped so far or indicated of a possible issue. I have asked for help on another forum and provided dump files there, but the freezing issue has remained a mystery. Lastly, I enabled the Driver Verifier which then led to BSOD when booting the computer. It said nothing else but DRIVER_VERIFIER_DETECTED_VIOLATION. No specific driver was mentioned. Couldn't get to the desktop, but had to disable Driver Verifier in safe mode.

· OS - Windows 10
· x64
· Windows 10
· Upgrade from Windows 7 OEM
· Less than 1 month old hardware (except for SSD and HDD)
· 1 day old Windows installation - have re-installed the OS mutliple times

· AMD FX 8350
· Gigabyte Radeon R9 390
· Gigabyte 970A-UD3P
· Thermaltake SmartSe 730W

· Custom built

Hi. . .

The bugcheck on the lone VERIFIER_ENABLED dump was 0xc4 - Driver Verifier flagged a driver.

The driver that was flagged - ATI video -
Code:
atikmdag.sys Fri Dec 04 12:14:28 2015 (5661C9F4)
I know that the ATI driver is only 6 weeks old, but check ATI or your system manufacturer's support site for a driver update -

http://www.sysnative.com/drivers/driver.php?id=atikmpag.sys

If BSODs ensue after the driver update, try rolling the driver back to a prior version.

Regards. . .

Oh, forgot to mention, that I have already tried the following things also:
-SSD firmware upgrade
-OS on HDD instead of SSD
-Another GPU
-Changed the SATA and power cables/slots
-Ran power supply test with good results

Any of those hasn't helped.

I haven't overclocked the system.

One thing that may have helped is having installed SATA drivers by the motherboard manufacturer during the Windows installation. These drivers cannot be installed afterwards for some reason and I think the drivers might have gotten lost during the last Windows repair installation.

Having only one RAM chip installed instead of two in Dual Channel mode might also make the system more stable, so I have now only one 8Gb RAM installed (got a kit of two).

Freezing usually happens either right after boot, but sometimes after some idling. Waking the computer from sleep has caused freezing the most, so I have disabled both sleep and hibernate functions. The computer has never frozen during heavy load like gaming. Also haven't got the BSOD except for once when I ran Driver Verifier.

Anyway, before reinstalling the Windows with the SATA drivers, I'll check once more if newer drivers for the graphics card are available and if so, then rerun the Driver Verifier. Probably should install SSD drivers again too, for that they may have gotten lost during OS reinstallation. Maybe some other tests/files could be useful?

Hi. . .

For info, I sit on the software side of the fence. I have very little hardware experience. My total hardware work on systems consists of replacing an HDD and adding RAM to a laptop a few years ago. So, I tend to get out of my depth quickly when threads turn toward hardware failure.

With everything you have tried, "unknown" hardware failure is the obvious cause of the freezing.

Do you have parts that you can swap out for testing - like video card, PSU?

Some hardware diagnostic testing apps:
https://www.sysnative.com/forums/hardware-tutorials/3908-prime95-hardware-stress-testing.html
https://www.sysnative.com/forums/hardware-tutorials/4072-hard-drive-hdd-diagnostics.html (HDD only - not SSD)
https://www.sysnative.com/forums/hardware-tutorials/3909-test-ram-memtest86.html
https://www.sysnative.com/forums/hardware-tutorials/3907-furmark-display-card-stress-test.html

How are your voltages?

You obviously should be able to run the system with the 2x8 GB (16 GB) RAM installed.

Have you ever tried a different mobo in your testing to try and find the cause of the freezing?

Regards. . .

Once again freezing occured quite soon after boot. I was writing this post when it happened without a warning, as usual.

Yes, I can swap the video card or PSU, but I don't have a spare motherboard that was compatible with the CPU or the memory.

I think I'm going to add that another RAM chip next, run those tests you mentioned and see the results. After that I'll swap power supply unit and run the tests again. Lastly I'll change the video card (already did this earlier when W7 was installed and it didn't help back then, so I'm a bit suspicious about it) and do the tests. If any of those wont help, I guess I have no choice but reinstall the OS once more and load those SATA drivers during the installation process.

The voltages the power supply tester gave were all as they should be. Also voltages and memory timings shown in the BIOS are ok.

Thank you for help so far.

After SSD firmware update and graphics drivers reinstall, as suggested above, I enabled Driver Verifier again. No BSOD this time when restarted the computer. Maybe those driver updates had an effect or the different Driver Verifier settings (didn't check so many boxes, only the ones mentioned in the list). I think it's too early to say if it had any effect on the freezing issue.

EDIT: Just noticed that there's Windows 8.1 mentioned in the thread's title when it should be Windows 10 (didn't find where this can be edited).

Hi. . .

I changed the thread title to Windows 10. Apologies for my mistake on the OS.

Driver Verifier doesn't necessarily always BSOD on re-boot. It will go through your 3rd party drivers performing various checks and if a violation is found, then a BSOD will be forced.

Let Driver Verifier run for at least 24 hours in the background.

It sounds like you've tested, swapped out/replaced every piece of hardware over the system's short life except for the motherboard. Your voltages look fine to my untrained eye (thanks for the screenshots).

Given that the system is 1 month old, can you RMA the motherboard?

I've been running Prime95 tests for 14 hours now. Every test has passed and system temperature has remained low, no BSODs or freezing. Before the last re-boot (+14h ago) I enabled the Driver Verifier. It should be running on its own after re-boot, right? I did the query and will attach it here, so that you can check that I have everything set as they should be. I can also attach the Prime95 results so far if needed.

I don't think I can get a refund for the mobo, but since it's still well under warranty I should get it repaired or a new one in change for free. It will be my last resort though. Not too keen to detach the CPU and other components, but if everything else has been ruled out, then there's no choice but do it.

I wonder is it normal that Performance Monitor report shows my system rating to be low giving that the components are fairly new. How reliable pefrmon actually is? I haven't noticed lagging or any other issues for that matter except for the random freezing issue and that one BSOD. Since it's basically all the components that the perfmon thinks have low perfomance, I guess I shouldn't give too much attention to the report.

You can ignore those numbers - those appear to be based on the old WinSAT reporting system which has been deprecated in Windows 10 - my guess is WinSAT has never actually run so those scores are irrelevant.

Ok, good to know. Thanks.

Hi. . .

I can't tell the exact settings from the Driver Verifier query, but can tell you that D/V is running. Let it run for 24 hours MINIMUM.

RMA'ing the mobo was just a thought. I obviously have no idea whether or not it is faulty.

It's just that we're running out of options with the other hardware parts + software to be the culprit.

Regards. . .

Driver Verifier had been running about 26 hours and then BSOD: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (fsni64.sys)

Since I had just installed some utilities by motherboard and GPU manufacturer (Gigabyte) before the crash, it's quite likely one of them caused the BSOD, I guess. After that, I got the same BSOD error message every time on Windows logon, so I had to boot in safe mode to disable the Driver Verifier. Probably safest to uninstall those utilities, was just checking them out anyways. Should I upload a dump file here?

As a hardware related sidenote:

I ran Furmark twice earlier today and it went just fine. Case side panel open temperature was at 87C and 92C when closed (sounds pretty high, but that's still acceptable for that card, I hear). No graphics bugs or other issues.

SSDLifePro says that the SSD is in an excellent condition, as does Kingston's own program. Didn't check HDD's condition this time since I have checked it already within the past 2 weeks and it's not even installed currently.

Sorry for flooding/separate posts, but I just noticed that I get that DRIVER_VERIFIER_DETECTED_VIOLATION always on re-boot when I configure Driver Verifier according to these instructions Driver Verifier-- tracking down a mis-behaving driver. - Microsoft Community

So it appears that updating/reinstalling graphics drivers didn't solve the issue.

When I configure Driver Verifier as instructed here on sysnative forums, re-boot goes without a problem and no BSOD occurs. Anyway, I'll leave Driver Verifier running with those settings again.

Driver Verifier had been running about 26 hours and then BSOD: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (fsni64.sys)

No dump is needed.

The driver fsni64.sys belongs to F-Secure - Driver Reference Table - fsni64.sys

I would recommend uninstalling F-Secure. If you do, use the removal tool, if available - Uninstallers (removal tools) for common Windows antivirus software—ESET Knowledgebase

I don't know what to tell you about the Driver Verifier settings. The ones in the sticky here have been in use for may years.

Regards. . .

John
