Automatic Maintenance is responsible for the CPU spike during idle.
Automatic Maintenance likely is not the cause of your BSODs, but we should still check it. Try turning off the automatic maintenance task in Windows 8. You will need to run the maintenance tasks manually, e.g. optimizing the hard drive, running error checking on the drive, running a full scan with Defender, etc.

To prevent the Regular Maintenance task from waking the machine at 3:00am, go to Action Center / Automatic Maintenance and disable the checkbox for “Allow scheduled maintenance to wake up my computer at the scheduled time”.
