[SOLVED] BSOD after opening torrent programs

Hello,

I had my computer built at the start of this year and it was completely fine for the first few months. However I started getting BSOD more and more frequently and I noticed it happening when a torrent program was open. I downloaded a new torrent program (uTorrent) but this has not solved anything. Generally, the BSOD occurs just minutes after opening uTorrent, but has lasted for a few hours with no problems occasionally.

The crash report always says the same thing: caused by NETIO.SYS and DRIVER IRQL NOT LESS THAN OR EQUAL.

I have downloaded all of the latest drivers for my network card multiple times (Asus pce-n15 wireless network card), but the problem continues.

The computer restarted fine with no BSOD, has been running for over an hour now with uTorrent open and no BSOD. However a few times, it has frozen for a few seconds which has never happened before. (EDIT: As I was typing this, it froze for about 2 seconds about 5 times in quick succession)

Even with the instructions given I could not for the life of me figure out how to get an output from the 'Windows7_vista_jcgriff2' file provided (the command prompt just opens and closes immediately with no further action). I have run a system health report and attempted to save it as a HTML. I have also attached the dump files. Sorry if I messed it up, this is the first time I've had to do this.

Just as an update. After having driver verifier enabled for a few hours I started getting BSOD again. I ended up disabling it after about 48 hours. Still getting BSOD when using uTorrent. If someone could help that would be great. Thanks

Ah well it has crashed several times again since I have disabled the driver verifier, so I'm not sure which dumps to attach. Should I re enable it and wait for it to crash again?

The attached DMP file is of the DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (d1) bugcheck.

A kernel-mode driver attempted to access pageable memory at a process IRQL (Interrupt Request Level) that was too high.

Usual causes are a device driver has a bug and attempted to access invalid memory, the pagefile has been corrupted or there is a memory problem.

DEFAULT_BUCKET_ID: VERIFIER_ENABLED_VISTA_MINIDUMP

^^ Verifier enabled, however it's failing to detect a driver in violation.

It's faulting by default NETIO.sys which is the Network I/O Subsystem driver. This is not the true cause and something else is forcing it to crash. Usually in network related crashes (NETIO, tcpip, etc) the culprits are 3rd party antivirus or firewall software conflicting, misc. 3rd party drivers, faulty NIC, etc.

Remove and replace Norton with Microsoft Security Essentials for temporary troubleshooting purposes:

Thanks for your response. I have uninstalled Norton and since have not had any BSODs.. however MSE won't install. Each time I try it just says an error has occurred and can't install it. Obviously this is an issue as I now have no virus protection on my computer. Where can I go from here?

Sorry for the late response, I've been quite busy.

I did use the Norton Removal tool to remove the software.

The system was only built at the start of this year and Norton is the only anti-virus software I've had on it. I've just downloaded the free version of Avast! for some protection.

I feel like I should note that since uninstalling Norton, I haven't had any BSODs, and it's been over a month now. Is there any way I can resolve this issue whilst allowing Norton to be re-installed?

No worries on time here ;)

There's a fair to good chance that Norton would behave if reinstalled, unless, of course, it's a Norton issue (I don't rate them very highly). If you go this route to test it out, use the Avast aswClear tool after the uninstall/reboot and before reintroducing Norton. Also check that Norton, if it's a suite, has disabled Windows' own firewall.

Given that you had issues trying to install MSE, your System may have other problems that may be part of the troubles you've had, keep a watching eye on the System/Application logs for any errors, especially any new/re-emerging ones after installing Norton.

I would stay far far away from Norton, but if reinstalling it is something your really want to do, by all means give it a try. Other than that, you covered it all, Andy.

Thanks for the responses guys, really appreciate it. I think I will leave it uninstalled for now and hopefully no more problems will arise.

I personally would stay away from Norton and other Internet Security Suites as well unless you can meticulously configure the firewall.

More often than not, 3rd party firewalls tend to block NETBIOS ports used by system services resulting in 0xc0000005 exceptions -- memory access violations, a.k.a., "access denied".
