Windows 8 BSoD

My laptop has recently taken to throwing up a BSoD on start up, before going on to automatically restart and continue as normal. It also gets a BSoD whenever it goes into sleep, manually or automatically. The BSoD displays the message "DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL" and the filename "iastora.sys"

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. It's only started recently. It might have happened once a couple weeks ago, but was this past week that I noticed it as a consistent issue.

Laptop

x64 Windows 8, OEM
New as of Nov. 2012
Same installation as came on the system.

CPU: Intel Core i7-3632QM
Video Card: AMD Radeon 7730m/Intel HD Graphics 4000
Motherboard: Not sure, don't know how to check. If someone can tell me how, I can go ahead and try.

Manufacturer: Dell
Model: Inspiron 7520, cannot find any other model number, not listed on the bottom of the system.

I think I followed the posting instructions correctly. If more information is needed, I'll do my best to provide it.

Thanks,

John

Update the Intel storage drivers (Rapid Storage Technology).
If you have the most updated version - uninstall the driver and then install a freshly downloaded copy.

These devices have problems:
USB-IF xHCI USB Host Controller ROOT\UOIP_BUS_DRIVER\0000 This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device.

Intel(R) Centrino(R) Wireless Bluetooth(R) 4.0 + High Speed Adapter USB\VID_8087&PID_07DA\6&1368E553&0&5 This device is disabled.
Right click on the USB-IF xHCI USB Host Controller and select "Uninstall", then reboot and see if it's detected properly.
Is the Bluetooth deliberately disabled? If so, why?

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

I updated the Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers. Opening it up from control panel, it shows that the SSD I have is inaccessible. I attached a screen of that.

I uninstalled the USB-IF xHCI USB Host Controller from Device Manager. Upon restarting, the only change is that it was no longer shown in Device Manager at all.

The page for the Cyberlink Virtual Device Driver contained 19 updates for the media suite software that came with the system. I really didn't want to install all that because it didn't seem relevant at all. Is it actually important?

Now I'm getting a different blue screen, (SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED) instead of (DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL). It still shows the driver name iastora.sys. I still get a bugcheck when I start the computer or wake it from sleep. Is it possible this is a physical problem with the SSD? The Intel Rapid Storage Technology screenshot I attached suggests that.

Also, should I now resend new versions of the files I originally included?

I also made a restore point before messing with all of this. Just in case I messed something up.

Thanks,

John

1 - Did you try to disassociate the cache on the SSD? BE VERY, VERY CAREFUL!!! - I don't know if this will erase your drive or not!!! Do you have any tests that you can run from the manufacturer? Is the SSD still under warranty? If so, you may be able to contact the manufacturer and swap it for another one.

2 - The fixed USB-IF xHCI USB Host Controller is actually buried deep inside Device Manager - but it's OK, otherwise it'd show as an error and you would see it.

3 - If you're not attached to the Cyberlink software - uninstall it. If you are, then leave it be and we'll try to work around it. I haven't seen any specific issues associated with this software and Win8 (other than it being a lot older than Windows 8).

Differing BSOD errors can be indicative of a lot of different things. Since the blame remains consistently on iastora.sys I have to suspect the storage sub-system. Since you've updated the drivers, the most likely problem areas are the hard drives or the motherboard.
- please run this hard drive diagnostic on the Western Digital drive: Hard Drive Diagnostic Procedure (I suggest there that you use the Seagate SeaTools test rather than the Western Digital test).
- contact the SSD manufacturer to see what options you have through them.
- zip up and upload the contents of the C:\Windows\Minidump directory for us to have a look at.

1 - No, I didn't. It didn't sound, from the info given, like it was something to do if you plan on having the drive stay there.
2 - Ok. That's good to know.
3 - I don't really care about it, but if leaving it there doesn't cause problems, I'd like to leave it there all the same.

I don't still have a warranty on the computer or the SSD. It came in the computer, and the six month warranty has run out by now.

I'll run the hard drive diagnostic when I get home, and attach the results to a post along with the minidump directory.

Thanks,

John

I ran the short drive tests first. It took about four seconds for it to say that both discs failed. Then I did a sequential long read on each of them. The SSD took seconds, and it said it passed. The hard disc took five and a half hours, and said it passed.

I attached a screen of each of the tests. What does this mean? Did it save a log somewhere that I could post?

Thanks,

John

Dell warranty is 1 year (at least in the US) - it covers the hardware. The reseller may offer some other sort of support/warranty - but the fact remains that the hardware is warranted for up to a year by Dell.

Further testing to help prove it (for warranty) is:
Western Digital Data LifeGuard tests (Windows version)
Seagate Seatools - bootable disk version
There is no need to test the SSD with any of these tools
Any Dell diagnostics that may be present on your system (try checking in the UEFI boot menu)
Run Driver Verifier to help rule out any other driver issues (use these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings )
Also, you can provide them with a copy of this (or a link if they can use that) to show them what's been done already.

It's possible that Dell will ask you to do a factory restore, so please be prepared for that:
- create the recovery disks/drive through the Dell Support Center/recovery options
- backup your data (as the restore will wipe everything out)

With the advent of "Reset" in Windows 8, they may ask for that also (it does basically the same thing). But I suspect that it's not quite the same (because I've had issues at work that a Reset wouldn't fix, but a wipe and reinstall did). So it's a good idea to have created the Dell Recovery disks - and to keep them in a safe place.

The latest memory dumps have changed from the STOP 0xD1 errors - to STOP 0x7E errors.
I expect that this is due to the updating of the Intel RST drivers.
If it's a driver issue, then Driver Verifier should help to show us that.
If not, then we'll see different results from Driver Verifier (either no BSOD, or BSOD's that blame hardware/Windows drivers)

There's a link at the Dell website for the software that came with the system (found it! - here's the link: https://smartsource.dell.com/Web/Welcome.aspx?ReturnUrl=/Web/Login.aspx ) that way, if you can get your copy of the Cyberlink software from there - you can uninstall the current version on your system and remove that possibility from the list of possible problems.

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

Sorry it took so long to post a reply. I don't have anything constructive to post, but I didn't want it to seem as if I was ignoring this.

I'll post the results here before I do anything with Dell support.

Thanks,

John
