Been visiting this site a few times, liked what I have seen and decided to join.

Thanks for the welcome. No I haven't read the book. Is it a good read?
There was a reference to Grave Diggers in Hamlet and thought there is a username with a difference.
I am a member of TSG and TSF with a different Nic.
 
The first reference I could think of was somebody who works in a cemetery.

It is actually, yes. The film's excellent as well. It's one of those very few films which is simply impossible to identify as either happy or sad. Beautifully bittersweet. You should watch it, then read the book if you like it. I'm usually a stickler for reading the books before seeing the films, but here I think it works very well either way around. The film has the added bonus of closing a few plot holes and distracting subplots. Overall though I think that both are truly excellent.

For similar books, Night is incredibly hard hitting and a real eye opener. I knew an awful lot about the horrors of the concentration camps having heard first hand accounts from my close relatives who experienced them for real - or at least I thought I did until I read that book. That book is a masterpiece.

For a lighter and much easier read, try Auslander. It takes a perspective from the inside of Nazi Germany. Fascinating to see it from a completely light. Here in the UK our early WWII education is very RAF/London Blitz orientated.

Watch Book Thief though - it's superb ��

I'll be interested to see what you pick. We see an awful lot of different avatars working on internet forums, and I personally actually find it very interesting to see what every different person picks. What does Katniss say about me? Hmmm. Probably not something I want to know :)

@Richard - the book thief is a good book. I've heard the film is good, but is a little too... risk averse and safe in how it approaches the topic.

Yes - I think that would be a very fair way to describe the film actually. It certainly slimmed down considerably on the criminality aspects for one thing, along with a couple of other aspects . Still though, it didn't tone down anything at all related to death and as I say above, somehow managed to be both an incredibly happy and desperately sad film at the same time. You definitely should watch it if you haven't already - it's worth seeing.

[curiously, they actually do a vast - and I mean vast - amount of scene reordering. The film basically took all of its material from the book, but in a completely different order. I think the ordering works much better in the film].
