Success! After that FRST fix, KB434900 installed, and after a reboot, another update, and another reboot, Windows is working just fine.

I took a look at a few of the files mentioned in the SURT log. They really are corrupt. Just NUL-NUL-NUL-NUL-NUL until the end of file. I must have really goofed when I was messing around with SURT before making this topic.
I'm pretty sure that's not the problem, and that I just need one last SFCFix. My second to last CheckSur had 306 corrupt catalogs. Your last fix replaced 250 of them. That would leave 56, which is exactly as many errors as I've got left.

Turn windows features on/off didn't populate, FYI. I'm assuming that as soon as it stops saying "please wait," the components hive is loaded and I can proceed.
