Thanks for the insight. I have December backups. I'll try a test restore to a VM tomorrow and see if Windows Update runs OK. If not, when you say in-place upgrade to W10 or W11? i.e. W10 -> W10 which would be my preference on this system or W10 -> W11?

I do have backups, although when exactly the issue started is not entirely clear to me at the moment. The system is still working 'fine' from a user perspective, it is just Windows Update that has issues. I guess I could try restoring in 30 day blocks (e.g. revert 1 month and try Windows...
