Here's the next fix.

Warning: This fix was written specifically for this system. Do not run this fix on another system.
  • Save any work you have open, and close all programs.
  • Download the attachment SFCFixScript.txt and save it to your desktop.
  • Drag the SFCFixScript.txt file over the SFCFix.exe executable and release it.

  • SFCFix will launch, let it complete.
  • Once done, a file will appear on your desktop, called SFCFix.txt.
  • Post the logfile (SFCFix.txt) as attachment in your next reply.

Step 2. Run the following DISM command and post the result. If it fails attach a new copy of the CBS log.
Code:
DISM /online /cleanup-image /RestoreHealth

The DISM command has now run successfully. Should I retry the Windows Update now?

Yes, please attempt to update and post the result (error code) and a copy of the CBS logs if it fails.

Windows update still fails with the same error message.

Great, provide also a copy of the COMPONENTS hive from that machine so I can export the associated registry keys as well to provide the next fix.

Upload your COMPONENTS hive.
  • Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
  • Please copy this file to your desktop.
  • Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
  • Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To > Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
  • If the file is too large to upload here, upload the file to www.wetransfer.com and post the link in your next reply.

Thanks, here's the next fix.

Please run the following DISM command again and post the result. If it fails attach a new copy of the CBS log.
Code:
DISM /online /cleanup-image /RestoreHealth

No errors when running this command, "The restore operation completed successfully".

That's perfect, but the error 0x8007001f you keep seeing means:
Code:
for hex 0x8007001f / decimal -2147024865
  WER_E_CABBING_FAILURE werapi.has an HRESULT: Severity: FAILURE (1), FACILITY_WIN32 (0x7), Code 0x1f for hex 0x1f / decimal 31
ERROR_GEN_FAILURE winerror.h A device attached to the system is not functioning.

Download the

Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop:

Download the 64 bit version: - Farbar Recovery Scan Tool Link
  • Note: Your antivirus program may report FRST incorrectly as an infection. If so, disable the real-time protection when downloading and running FRST.
  • Right-click to run the tool as administrator. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Note: Ensure that the Addition.txt check box is checked at the bottom of the form within the Optional Scan area.
  • Press the Scan button.
  • Please wait for the tool to finish. It will produce two logfiles called FRST.txt and Addition.txt in the same directory the tool is run from (which should be the desktop)
  • Post the logfiles FRST.txt and Addition.txt as attachment in your next reply.

It seems this device (smart card reader) is causing issues!
It also seems that you are trying to update this system with remote access, is that right?

Hi,

There is no smartcard reader attached. I uninstalled the two softwares, rebooted the computer and tried installing updates again, but it still fails. Attached screenshot and new CBS logs.

Hi,

Please provide the following logs if exists:
C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Panther\Setuperr.log
C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Panther\Setupact.log

Provide the profile information of this system.
  • Click the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  • When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator.
Copy and paste the following commands one at a time into the command prompt and press enter after each.
    Code:
    reg query "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList" /s > "%userprofile%\desktop\ProfileList.txt"
    reg query "HKEY_USERS" >> "%userprofile%\desktop\ProfileList.txt"
  • These commands will collect the System and Application logs and create ProfileList.txt on your Desktop.
  • Attach this file in your next reply.
