Hi everyone. I'm in need of help. I stumbled across this forum while trying to figure out why my Windows Updates have been failing for the last couple years.

I'm on Windows 10 and the following updates fail to install on my system:
  • Feature update to Windows 10, version 22H2
  • 2024-05 Cumulative Update for .NET Framework 3.5, 4.8 and 4.8.1 for Windows 10 Version 21H2 for x64 (KB5038284) - fails with "Download error - 0x800700c1"
  • 2022-02 Cumulative Update Preview for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8 for Windows 10 Version 21H2 for x64 (KB5010472) - fails with "Some update files are missing or have problems. We'll try to download the update again later. Error code: (0x80073712)"
Some updates appear to get all the way through the download before displaying an error message. Retrying each update yields the same result.

I tried upgrading to Windows 11 to get around the problem but I got similar errors.

My CBS.zip is attached. Thanks in advance!

EDIT: I forgot to mention that when I ran sfc /scannow as an Administrator from the command line, I got the following response: "Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service."

  • Save any work you have open, and close all programs.
  • Download the attachment SFCFix.zip and save it to your desktop.
  • Drag the SFCFix.zip file over the SFCFix.exe executable and release it.

  • SFCFix will launch, let it complete.
  • Once done, a file will appear on your desktop, called SFCFix.txt.
  • Post the logfile (SFCFix.txt) as attachment in your next reply.

Step 2. Run the following DISM command and post the result. If it fails attach a new copy of the CBS log.
Code:
DISM /online /cleanup-image /RestoreHealth

Maxstar, thank you so much for helping me with this issue!

I ran SFXFix.exe. The SFCFix.txt output is attached.

I then ran the DISM command as administrator. I got the error in the screenshot below. The CBS.log and dism.log output files are attached.

I ran the second fix.

I ran SFXFix.exe with the second fix zip file. The SFCFix.txt output is attached.

I then ran the DISM command as administrator. I got what appears to be the same error as before in the screenshot below. The CBS.log output file is attached.

Maxstar, thank you so much for the help. I was really at wit's end and was facing having to start from scratch. Is this just your hobby, or what?

You're welcome. Glad to hear the issue has been resolved...(y)

Is this just your hobby, or what?

Yes and no! Computer problems have been a hobby since the early '90s, when I discovered them myself, and it is also part of my work in various ICT fields nowadays!
