[SOLVED] Windows server 2019 server update issues after July updates

I have the CBS log file.
I went back and manually installed the cumulative updates, thinking that would replace these files, but not sure why it does not.
I even have the whole source DVD with the slip-streamed updates and integrated the latest patches into the source and rebuilt the sources\install.wim file.

Nothing seems to work, and I think the problem is escalating, because now with several of these files so-called corrupt nothing runs very well.
Not sure how this is getting worse. No hard drive corruption, checked that.

and a bunch of other stuff. notepad.exe doesnt spawn now, neither does other software.

I thought I could just use the Source image I had.
I can also re-install Windows server in-place, but I was thinking it would say "repair" install, but instead its just over-writing Windows in place and "saving" my data and applications. Is that the same as a repair install used to be?

Thanks again for your review.

What I would like to know is how to create the SFCFix.txt myself, running through the CBS.log file. Is there a program that can facilitate this? I seem to be experiencing severe permissions issues, not sure if thats the final problem or not. It seem I have all the files, but even using the /Online doesn't seem to work.

I saw over here there was a super-manual method for finding files for repair.
Do you know of a script/tool that will download these from the proper place? Is that what SFCFix does?

Since the last post I reviewed the CBS.log again, and getting a lot of \??\C:\ type file paths.
I remembers as a part of the whole "not being able to complete an update" I had somehow magically had my "Adguard" software give an error about licensing. I found my machine name shifted to a default WIN-TIN7AS3VV1I where I had named it FARSCAPE and it was just fine, RDP was working, licenses, everything.

So obviously an update or something, caused this. I wonder if NTFS corruption? But I ran chkdsk and other tools, no disk corruption.

At this point, I guess I will attempt to remove Adguard and I already removed AVG antivirus.
But perhaps I need a method to validate my computer SID, Machine name, Permissions Associated, etc.

I set my system to AutoLogon per the FAQ (the insecure one), and it does login, but changing the computer name, then made an AutoLoginSID with a totally different SID which suggests something went amiss with the computer name.

Is there such a script to just compare the permissions, make sure the computer name, SID, NETBIOS name are all the same and matched up? This is just a Workgroup not domain.

Hi and welcome to Sysnative,

Step 1. Download
67139f7e69a58-SFCFix-ico.PNG
SFCFix and save it to your desktop.

Warning: This fix was written specifically for this system. Do not run this fix on another system.
  • Save any work you have open, and close all programs.
  • Download the attachment SFCFix.zip and save it to your desktop.
  • Drag the SFCFix.zip file over the SFCFix.exe executable and release it.

  • SFCFix will launch, let it complete.
  • Once done, a file will appear on your desktop, called SFCFix.txt.
  • Post the logfile (SFCFix.txt) as attachment in your next reply.

Step 2. Run the following DISM command and post the result. If it fails attach a new copy of the CBS log.
Code:
DISM /online /cleanup-image /RestoreHealth

The fix actually did work, and even before I rebooted.
It applied the October Cumulative patch as well, with no troubles.
But RDP wasnt working, and then I finally figured out BFE wasnt starting because of an error.
So definately in the middle of all this, I uninstalled AVG Business Edition, just to get the AVG out of there.

I hope that BFE and Defender Firewall can just be fixed or re-installed.
I am attaching the logfile and a new CBS.log hopefully something clicks.

Thanks again.

Well, I am going to be a believer of this process.
Your SFCfix is certainly a gem.
\WinSxS and tlsbrand_ seem to be the problem spots.

BFE is starting, Server MAnager is properly executing all its monitoring screens now.
I am still testing the fallout, but at least I understand this.

Of course I want to understand why. I assume a failed hotfix.
Is there documentation on how SFXfix works?
Because I tried to run it myself, and it didn't come back with the same list and file replacement you did.
Is there another script, or do you guys put this list together by hand?

Thanks again.

Glad to hear it seems everything is up an and running, however there is no public documenation on how SFCFix works rather than this thread!
Please let me know if there are any remaining issues or not

I will need to take responsibility for the remainder of the problems. LOL
My taskbar icons disappeared, seems there might be an update bug there. NP, just re-create them.
My taskbar is transparent now. Oh well.
I am going to upgrade to Server 2022 anyway, but I had to get my registry and upgrades working first.

Thanks again. We can close out this thread.
I will read your other thead, sounds incredibly interesting to learn about the SysFix scan stuff.
Microsoft seems to have some good tools, but not "quite" comlpete it seems.
