• Still running Windows 7 or earlier? Support for Windows 7 ended on January 14th 2020. Please review the thread here for more details.

Is MSE better than ESET for Windows 7 in 2025?

Eventually all security vendors will cease support for Windows 7, MSE itself is actually also EOL.

From what I see here What is Microsoft Security Essentials? - Microsoft Support MSE is also not receiving any signature updates since 2023. In that regard, they're both equally insufficient for malware protection.

I would recommend considering installing Windows 11, Windows 10 will reach EOL next year, so you will not be at risk of malware infection.

I don't know if ESET internet security version 16 may still be receiving signature updates and only the software updates stopped, but if even the signature updates stopped then as I mentioned they're equally insufficient for malware protection.

Many security solutions these days aim to offer more than being an antivirus scanner. Bitdefender, for example, which I used a few years back had developed its own browser that's designed to be its own secure environment, I was one of few people who was able to test their software before it was released to the public, but I don't know if this feature is still present. These days security vendors mean to implement AI and other similar software to prevent malware infection from ransomware, scam attempts, monitoring the dark web to offer identity protection, etc.

ESET Online Scanner is something different, it's for detecting and removing malware after infection is already there.

I don't think all those modules need updating on a regular basis, I see one called 'translation support module' which is probably related to ensuring the translation for each language is added and updated, that only needs updating occasionally. In that regard, there'll be at least a few more up-to-date. But the ones for detection, prevention, cleaning of malware in different areas of the computer will not be and that's one reason why you'll be at risk of getting infected if you do not move on from Windows 7.

I still have no idea if there will be a paid, full antivirus software for Windows 7 in 2025?

Is Windows 7 with the latest patches a better system than ChromeOS on Chromebook for using banking services etc? Thank you.

Why would any security vendor continue to develop software for Windows 7? It's going to be notorious to maintain with numerous bugs that won't get fixed, like dwelling with the water running. That's why the vendors are slowly pulling their hands off support for Windows 7.

Any operating system that's not EOL will be better than Windows 7 in terms of security.

Windows 10 will reach EOL next year
So W11 is the best step forward? Doesn't it make sense to upgrade to Windows 10 and buy antivirus software?

II also use ChromeOS on my Chromebook and I want to use both (Windows and ChromeOS) somehow...

If you get Windows 10 now, you'll be in the same situation soon. In my opinion that makes Windows 10 not worth it anymore. Windows 10 will be EOL by October 2025, that's in 10 months. It would be best to get Windows 11 instead, and you may not even need to buy new antivirus software.

Windows Defender, a built-in security solution for Windows 8 and above, has been vastly improved by Microsoft and is enough for most people. Windows Defender in Windows 8 and above is basically MSE but improved, I use Windows Defender myself on all my computers.

I don't know much about other operating systems like ChromeOS, at least not enough to provide an opinion that can help sufficiently. From what it sounds like, you want to have Windows installed on the chromebook while also having ChromeOS installed on the chromebook, i.e. a dual-boot?

From what I read, it's a Linux distribution and from what I know Linux hasn't had many malware problems in all those years that it's available. There hasn't been much reason to have an anti-virus for Linux.

If it's similar to Android, and because it's from Google, it may be that you can get an antivirus solution by installing it as an android app if one's needed. Next question will be to what extend they can provide protection. From what I read here, in the past there was a limit to how far protection can be provided in ChromeOS, but since I don't have ChromeOS I can't say if that's current.

Chromium is a web browser, whose underlying technology is also freely available for Windows in the form of Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, etc.

What security information are you looking for between ChromeOS and Windows?
