I've had some issues with my pc the past couple of days including a corrupt driver message for my gpu. I attempted to uninstall drivers but accidentally uninstalled the gpu from my device manager, now it's back but I can't update the drivers. I ran an sfc scan earlier and it said that it found corrupt files but was unable to fix them, I tried to find them in the log but couldn't. I'm definitely a computer novice so I would greatly appreciate help.

Hi and welcome to Sysnative,

Upload your DRIVERS Hive
  • Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\config and locate the DRIVERS file.
  • Please copy this file to your desktop.
  • Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
  • Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To > Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named DRIVERS.ZIP on your desktop.
  • If the file is too large to upload here, upload the file to www.wetransfer.com and post the link in your next reply.

Yes, please do the following.

Replace Drivers Hive Manually

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.
  1. Download DRIVERS.ZIP and save to your desktop.
  2. Right-click on it and select Extract all.... Make sure the "Show extracted files when complete" is checked and click Extract.
  3. Now we have the DRIVERS file that we will be using to replace your current one.
  4. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\config
  5. Right-click on the current DRIVERS file and select rename. Rename it to DRIVERS.bad.
Note: If you get an error that the file is in use, reboot your computer and then try again.
  6. Take the file from the Drivers folder on your desktop and paste it into C:\Windows\System32\config

Afterwards reboot the system and attempt to update. If it fails attach the latest CBS logs and the following logfile.

Upload the setupapi.dev.log file
  • Open Windows Explorer and browse to the C:\Windows\INF folder.
  • Right-click on the file setupapi.dev.log and choose Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Now the message will appear, "Windows cannot create the Compressed (zipped) Folder here. Do you want it to be placed on the desktop instead?"
  • Click on the Yes button here.

  • Attach the file setupapi.dev.zip in your next reply.

I'm having an error extracting it into desktop? It says it was unable to create that specified directory? I apologize

Please try to download the file to another location, like C:\tmp.

It has allowed me to install drivers but now sfc/scannow says there is a repair that is waiting for reboot. I have rebooted several times and the message stays the same. I'm not sure if this setupapi is the right file, there was no file including ".log"

Hi,

Upload your COMPONENTS hive.

  • Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
  • Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To > Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
  • If the file is too large to upload here, upload the file to www.wetransfer.com and post the link in your next reply.

Yes, please try to update. If it fails attach a new copy of the CBS logs.

You're welcome. Glad to hear this system is up-to-date now and SFC did not found any issues. (y)

I will mark this thread as solved.

Unfortunately my pc crashed and says the digital signature for a file couldn't be verified. error code 0cx0000221

Hi,

Do you get that message every time you start up or just once during update process?

My pc crashed and would show that message anytime I tried to start or repair. I turned it off and left it for about 10 minutes and it booted normally

Okay, please do the following:

Download
520c07ffc7e11-CrystalDiskInfo-Canned.png
Crystal DiskInfo and save it to your Desktop.
  • Run the installer to install the program.
  • When finished, open the installed program by double clicking on it.
    • Good - There are no problems found, the drive is working properly.
    • Caution - The drive have some problems. (which indicates a drive that you should most likely be thinking about backing up and replacing.)
    • Bad - This usually indicates a drive that’s dead or near death. (! - Back up all important data as soon as possible.)
  • Resize the window so that all information is visible.
  • Take a screenshot of what you see and post it in your next reply.
