Server 2016 V1607 Build 14393.6252

Windows update is in a sorry state. Repeated failures to install KB4589210 and KB5040434. Tried every method I know of including scedit

sfc /scannow fails with error "Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service"

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth fails with error: 1812 AN initialization error occured.

sfcfix finds no corruption

Attached are the CBS log folder and the ComponentsScanner output.

Any help gratefully received.

Thanks.

Hi @efiniste,

Welcome to Sysnative Forums!

If you haven't already, please review the posting instructions here, and attach the requested log files. Without log files, our helpers will not be able to assist, and this will slow down fixing your machine.

If logs have been already been provided, our team of volunteers will analyse the provided log files to build a fix for your system. Please be aware that this may take several days from your initial post, due to the high volume of threads that we receive.

Hello and welcome,

Warning: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Do not run this script on another machine.
  1. Download the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop:
64-bit: Downloading Farbar Recovery Scan Tool
Note: Your antivirus program may report FRST incorrectly as an infection. If so, disable the real-time protection when downloading and running FRST.
  2. Download the attachment fixlist.txt and save it to your desktop.
  3. Right-click on FRST64.exe and select "Run as administrator".
  4. Press the Fix button.
  5. The tool will now process fixlist.txt.
  6. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
  7. When finished, a log called Fixlog.txt will appear in the same directory the tool is run from.
  8. Attach the logfile Fixlog.txt to your next reply.

This machine has some curious corruptions with the provided files. The file sizes and date and time look normal but the content is completely wrong. For example an .dll file contains xml data and an exe file contains text.

Perform a disk scan:
ChkDsk Scan
  • Right-click the Start button and click Commandprompt (Run as administrator).
  • A window appears. Typ CHKDSK and press the enter key.
  • Wait until CHKDSK is finished.
  • Download the ZIP file (ListChkdskResult.exe by SleepyDude), extract it and save the file ListChkdskResult.exe on your desktop.
    https://www.sysnative.com/forums/attachments/listchkdskresult-zip.109158/
  • Rightclick
    58a60a47ed1bd-ListChkdskResult.PNG
ListChkdskResult.exe and click Run as administrator.
  • On completion the tool will save a textfile called ListChkdskResult.txt on your desktop.
  • Attach this text file to your next reply.

Ok, the log looks good, no major corruptions are found.
Lets replace all files in the 2 folders you provided as a first fix.

Follow the instructions below please.

Step 1:
WARNING! The following fix is specific to the user's system in this thread only. No one else should follow these instructions, as it could damage your system.
  • Download
    myjIXnC.png
SFCFix and move the executable to your desktop.
  • Download the attachment SFCFix.zip and save it on your desktop.
  • Save any work you have open, and close all programs.
  • Drag the SFCFix.zip file over the SFCFix.exe executable and release it.
    1p8eDnI.gif
  • SFCFix will launch, let it complete.
  • Once done, a file will appear on your desktop, called SFCFix.txt.
  • Open the file, then copy and paste its content in your next reply.

Step 2:
Restart the machine.
Run the command sfc /scannow in an elevated commandprompt and report the result.
If it fails, copy the file C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\cbs.log to your desktop.
Zip the copied file and attach the zipped cbs.log to your next reply.

I think we're in business Peter. Installed 2 updates this morning, one successfully and one pending a reboot. I'll do that after hours tonight. Thanks so much for your help.

I have another 2016 server behaving similarly. Shall I start a new thread for that or add it to this one?

Ok, after that provide a fresh copy of the file cbs.log. There might be some issues left.

Start a new thread to avoid any confusion between different machines.

Thanks Peter. I've started a new thread.

On this one, server rebooted and update completed. sfc /scannow showed no errors this time. CBS log folder attached.

Great. I will mark this thread as solved.

Follow the instructions below to cleanup the tools and logfiles used in this thread.
Rename the file FRST64.exe to uninstall.exe and run it. This will remove all files and folders created by FRST and the tool itself.
Reboot the machine to complete.
You may remove all other tools and log files.

Take care.
