Hi everyone! I've been reading through a number of posts and I decided to try my luck to see if anyone else has advice on solving my problem, because I've reached a dead end.
After a recent Windows Update, Windows Update itself has been failing to open (even from Settings app) and after about a minute being logged in, Explorer will stop running and restart repeatedly (10-15 times). I have had this issue once before, and I had to reinstall Windows clean to fix it with a full reformat of the drive. Nothing else would fix it, even a quick format seemed to give errors when reinstalling from separate media (USB). The difference was that the previous time, Explorer would never succeed to run, and would keep restarting over and over. I have tried System Restore to no avail, as well as trying to do an Inplace Upgrade. The Modern Setup Host program also fails to run. In fact, when I run the Media Creation Tool, I get the same issue with Explorer stopping and restarting repeatedly, but it does end and the Media Creation Tool can indeed create the Win10 media installation disc. However, running it inside my installation of Win10 either directly from the Media Creation Tool or by creating bootable media and running it from there both fail as Modern Setup Host fails to run.
Since my computer is usable this time as opposed to last time (for now :S ), I figured I had some time to ask some experts if they had any solutions.
A few things I noticed:
SFC said it found corrupted files it wasn't able to repair, most of the errors in the log say that there's a hash mismatch with the ones in the store.
DISM hangs at 62.3%. It cannot be cancelled with Ctrl+C or D at this point, though if it doesn't run to here, I can cancel it. If I shut down, Windows goes to the shutting down blue screen, but says "Getting Windows ready... Don't turn off your computer". This will also hang and I have to use the power switch on my tower to shut down the computer.
ComponentsScanner gave me a dirty hive notification that didn't show up in the txt file, so I attached an image of it here.
I attached the requested logs as well as some screenshots of the problem report so you can see which services are stopping. Before Explorer stops, it's first DPS or Diagnostic Policy Service, but in the technical details, the fault modules generally seem to be DLLs that sfc considers corrupt. I considered that my SSD hardware might be bad if this happened again, but it seemed to coincide with Windows Update twice now and my drives are in good condition according to SMART, so I don't see any evidence for that.
I just want to thank you for the support and help that you've been giving! :)
