December automatic update failed to install and I was getting BSODs with a wide variety of stop codes. Repair and update also failed. A full clean reinstall from originally purchased thumb drive failed to correct problem. Collected various data as per instructions in thread elsewhere on this forum with instructions to post the 2 attached files on this forum.

Thanks in advance for any help determining and hopefully fixing the problem.

  • Right-click ComponentsScanner.exe and select "Run as administrator", click Yes on the UAC (User Account Control) prompt which appears.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions.

Upload your DRIVERS Hive
  • Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\config and locate the DRIVERS file.
  • Please copy this file to your desktop.
  • Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
  • Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To > Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named DRIVERS.ZIP on your desktop.
  • If the file is too large to upload here, upload the file to www.wetransfer.com and post the link in your next reply.
 
This looks good, but it seems you are still running on an old build (10.0.22000.318) - 09-11-2021.

  • Right-click on Windows11InstallationAssistant.exe and select the option: Run as administrator.
  • Press the Update now button, click after the compatibility check on Next.
  • The Update Assistant will now download the latest Feature Update.
  • After verifying the download, the Feature Update will be installed.
  • When this process is ready, click on the Restart now button to complete the installation.
 
Yes. it's an old build because when I did the clean re-install the 2023-10 Cumulative Update for Windows 11 for x64-based Systems (KB5031358), which would (presumably) have taken the 21H2 reinstalled version up to 24H2 or something that would have allowed for the upgrade, failed at installation. So I am running only what the thumb drive installed. I'm pretty sure that in my 2 month long attempt to fix this problem I've done what you suggest for the next step on several occasions, including remotely by MS reps in windows update tech support chats (I can give you the case numbers for the first 2. lost the third when I reinstalled windows). All these attempts failed. Hence the attempted cold full re-install (starting with partitions) direct from original installation medium.

If you still want me to try again. let me know and I'll do it.
 
step 3-3 failed at 71%. "Something went wrong" message. error code 0x8007007f

In the past, if I retry often enough it will sometimes make it through the process eventually. But the result doesn't fix the problem.
 
Tried again. First try 3-3 got to around 80%, then the counter reset to 0% and something went wrong at 71% the second time through the counter. This time got BSOD at 80% before any reset of counter.

Need to keep the internet connected for Installation assistant to work. Think I've done it at least once before with Bitdefender disabled. Did it again to confirm. Installed to 79% and then BSOD stop code: memory_management
 
Yup, but (a) disabled (antivirus/firewall) is different than (an antivirus/firewall) uninstalled completely (even if it shouldn't be like this, but in reality unfortunately there is a difference).
Given that the Windows 11 Installation Assistant doesn't work and need an (enabled) internet connection, did you try the Windows 11 installation media that doesn't need an internet connection?
 
(I was editing my previous reply but unfortunately I reloaded the page and lost everything... I'll be less precise)

In event viewer logs (system 30-31 January, application 31 January), I found ntfs/chkdsk messages saying Windows has found problems that must be fixed offline. Please run "chkdsk /f" to fix the issues.
I would follow the suggestion; from an elevated command prompt, run: chkdsk c: /f
CHKDSK should tell you that it is unable to scan and should prompt you to do so on the next reboot. So answer Y, reboot and let him do his job:

Ran chkdsk c: /f and it completed. No report that I can see, but I did see the words "repaired" and/or "repairing" appear on screen after the restart allowed the command to run (context didn't register - wasn't paying that close attention)..

Other than the link Maxstar posted earlier, I have the purchased thumb drive, but that will only install the (I assume basic) 21H2 version and needs the internet for updates, which is when the comp craps out. Is there a way to download and install just an updated version of windows security (that's what I was referring to above - I initially misread your post and thought you were suggesting i install that), so I can safely uninstall bitdefender?

Also, I'm not sure I've mentioned it along the way, but when I did the full windows reinstall, the cumulative update failed even then and that was before I had reinstalled Bitdefender (because I was expecting Windows Security to be fully operational, along with all the rest of Windows 11, after the reinstall.

You can find the chkdsk report in event viewer, application, ID 26266 (if i remember correctly), source chkdsk or wininit.
Copy/paste here the report.
 
I'm not at all familiar with using event viewer and have had no luck navigating past this point.
