[SOLVED] 800f0906 on Windows 8.1 64 bit

Hello

Windows Update stopped working. I tried everything, removing catroot2 and softwaredistribution, sfc checks, dism repairs with and without images set in group policy or command line, windows update repair form microsoft, i always get errors.

I tried to run SFCFix, but it always ends up stuck. Left it overnight, but still it does not finish it's job.

This is where it is always stuck.

It seems that everything went ok, as far as SFCFix goes. Nevertheless, I still got windows update error, so I have run SCFix again (without the script) to detect problems and it has been running for 6 hours with dism stuck at 40%, so I think I'll send the recent logs again

I have ran Windows Update, received error 0x800f0831, then ran Windows Update Diagnostic, but still had no luck.
So I ran sfc /scannow (no errors), then dism /online /cleanup-umage /restorehealth, which pretended to repair successfully. So I tried to update after runnig WU Diagnostic again and again I have 800f0831.

Let's try this:

Install Update with DISM

Download KB3081320 here: Download Security Update for Windows 8.1 for x64-based Systems (KB3081320) from Official Microsoft Download Cente
Copy the MSU file to a convenient location (such as C:\temp).
Click on the Start

button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

cd C:\temp

replace C:\temp with your path if different

expand {update name}.msu -f:* C:\temp

replace {update name} with the name of the MSU file downloaded in step 1

DISM.exe /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:C:\temp\{update name}.cab
You should receive the message:
The operation completed successfully.
Restart Windows to complete this operation.
Do you want to restart the computer now (Y/N)?
Make sure to allow the computer to restart if prompted.

If you receive any other message:
Right-click on the Command Prompt window and click Select All, this will invert all of the colours by selecting the text, now press enter. All of this text is now copied.
Paste (Ctrl+V) it into your next post please.

If the installation fails, also zip and attach C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log with your reply.

Much to my surprise, the operation succeeded, though there was no prompt to restart the computer. Windows Update was totally broken, that is I was unable even to check for new updates, but I have deleted catroot2 and Software Distribution, re-run Windows Update Diagnostics and finally I was able to install updates!

So my system is now up to date - at least for some time. I will surely let you knows when it'll break again :)
