Adobe Flash Player Version 17 Released with Security Updates

Adobe has released Version 17.0.0.134 of Adobe Flash Player and Adobe AIR for Windows and Macintosh. Version 11.2.202.451 has been released for Linux. The Extended Release Version is 13.0.0.277.


Flash Player updates for Windows 8 and above were released with the Microsoft Security Updates yesterday.

Although using the auto-update feature of Flash Player tends to be slow, if you wish to set up that feature, the information is available in my blog post here.

Would appreciate some help, and if this is not the right place to post this, please direct me to the right place.

Have a friend (senior citizen) who likes to play Scrabble and some other Pogo games on Windows 8. However, whenever attempting to do so,
Adobe Flash problems develop.

Been trying to help, but not sure of what to do next.
Here is the current situation:
1. An icon shows in Control Panel for Adobe Flash Player, but, when clicking the Updates tab in the FP Settings Manager, everything is greyed out.
2. In the Programs and Features section of the Control Panel, Adobe Flash Player 17.0.0.169 is nowhere to be found.
3. In Internet Explorer 10, Tools > Manage Add-ons > Toolbars and Extensions there is an entry for Shockwave Flash Object, and it is enabled.
Clicking on it shows version: 17.0.0.169
4. Quite a few updates show as failed in the Windows Updates History. The IE Flash Player initially failed, but, next day it shows as having succeeded.

There was a McAfee Security program installed, but, uninstalled it, and Windows Defender was turned on/enabled without issue.
McAfee may have upset the works at some point.

It is my understanding that Flash Player does not need installed on its own in W8, since it is updated along with IE.

Any thoughts on how to get the Updates tab of the Flash Player Settings Manager working again, and not greyed out?
Also, how to get Adobe Flash Player 17.0.0.169 showing in the Programs and Features section of the Control Panel?

I hope the following will help. See my comments, inline:

I recently purchased an HP Stream 7 tablet and that got me for a bit too. On the Updates tab, it was necessary to click "Change Update Settings". However, this was only because I have the plug-in installed for the Pale Moon browser. With Windows 8 and above, Adobe Flash Player is updated via Windows Update. If Automatic Updates are disabled, the Flash Player update can be downloaded from KB2857645, Microsoft Security Advisory: Update for Vulnerabilities in Adobe Flash Player in Internet Explorer 10: July 9, 2013.

2. In the Programs and Features section of the Control Panel, Adobe Flash Player 17.0.0.169 is nowhere to be found.

Adobe Flash Player will only show in Programs and Features if the NPAPI (Firefox/Pale Moon plug-in) or PPAPI (Google Chrome plug-in) are installed. To repair Flash Player in IE in Windows 8 and above, it is necessary to repair IE. Thus, you are correct in saying "Flash Player does not need installed on its own in W8, since it is updated along with IE." It is only with alternate browsers that the separate plug-in needs to be installed.

Which is the current version.

Adobe had a couple "out of band" updates for Flash Player earlier this year and, particularly with weekend releases, there were delays getting the update to the Microsoft servers.

Personally, it seems that Adobe Flash Player has been a lot more unstable the past few months.

On the Windows Updates, they are not disabled. However, the Flash Player update failed, but, then it succeeded on another try.
After the successful try, Windows restarted and was configuring the updates. It did not happen. When it got to 97%, it gave a notice of
failure configuring Windows Updates, and the computer started reverting changes.

Have a feeling that is why there is a half baked install of the following:

@donetao, you aren't reading what is posted cottonball knows how to check for the latest updates. That is not the issue the person he is helping is experiencing.

The first attempt lists Error Code 800706BA, which is described as occurring if an update installation crashes. Were any other updates being installed along with the second Flash Player update? Since it is listed as successful and the most recent version 17.0.0.169 shown as installed, it is possible that the notice of failure configuring Windows Updates and then reverting the changes was referring to a different update since Flash Player is generally straight forward. I wouldn't hurt to view update history and sort on Status to see if there are any other recent failed updates.

That said, considering that the friend you are helping is having issues with Flash Player, yes, I would create a System Restore point and attempt installing the update from the posted link. Make sure IE is closed when you attempt reinstalling the update.

There are plenty of other recent failed updates!
Thinking about asking for assistance in the Windows Update forum...

Will do a System Restore and follow through with your suggestion. Need something good to happen here...my hair is turning much whiter
trying to solve this Flash Player issue.

Yes, with other recent failed updates, I agree it would be a good idea to post in the WU forum.
 
Found an Adobe Forum for Flash Player issues like installing or using.

Also giving it a whirl. If anything useful comes out of it, will post a link here to the topic so we can all benefit.

In the meantime, if anyone has any additional thoughts about why the Updates tab of Flash Player Settings Manager is still greyed out :huh:, please, do not hesitate to post.

The good news is that Flash Player 17.0.0.0.169 is installed, the latest version of Java is installed, a gazillion updates were installed, and all is running well.

After searching and searching, decided to use the option to: Refresh PC without affecting your files

Incredibly, after the Refresh, was able to download a multitude of updates, Windows got configured without reverting changes, and it all works !!

It sure helps to post some thoughts and get your opinions.

That is great news! I'm happy that your friend's computer is back working as it should be and can play Scrabble an the other games now. The anticipated Adobe Flash Player update next Tuesday should go smoothly now.
