[SOLVED] another sfc/scannow cannot fix error

Hi Brian. Repair install was completed and I reinstalled the drivers from backup. I have not installed any windows updates as I am not sure how you want me to proceed.

FYI I have CCleaner, Windows 7 manager and Glary utilities installed. Unsure if I should use them in future.

Excellent. Go ahead and check for updates and install all of them, reboot when prompted, check for updates, install, etc. until all updates are installed.

Personally I would not use any of these programs. CCleaner is good but would stay away from the registry cleaning options.

Windows update has been running for 4 hours checking for updates. Will let it run overnight and do the updates tomorrow. I assume once they are all installed I let you know?

Should I look at any program to help keeping the system clean?

Yes, please let me know. Also, it may be much quicker to download/install the Windows 7 Convenience Rollup. The checking for updates taking a long time is a known issue and was recently fixed as well. You can see the following article for more info.

I really don't recommend any cleaners. They can cause more issues than they are worth.

Update is still checking for updates after 15 hours so I will cancel and do the Rollup and try again.

Followed your link above and tried to download from Microsoft download centre but it says I had to update IE. Attempted to do so but the upgrade failed. Then downloaded the All supported x64-based versions of Windows 7 download package from https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3020369.

Hit run and now have the windows update stand alone installer running and searching for updates on this computer

Seem to be going round in circles.
Am I doing something wrong?

I downloaded it for you. You may download from here.

Note: The link may not work for another 30 minutes.

Yes. Let it go and let me know what the next screen is that comes up.

It has been running for 2.5 hours still with the same message - searching for updates on your computer, and done nothing else. Is this normal?

I would let it go as long as you can. Until we can get the "fix" installed on your machine for slow windows updates it will take a long time. I'm still hoping it will be quicker than checking for updates, then downloading and installing the updates.

This has been fun. I discovered the windows update client was corrupt so updated it and ran your download again and found the updates were not for this system. Meanwhile windows update ran in the background and found 226 updates so I am now installing them and will advise when completed.

All updates complete except IE 11. Also tried by offline install. Error code 9C59.

Wow, thanks for the update. OK, please zip up and attach the following two logs.
c:\windows\ie11_main.log
c:\windows\logs\cbs\cbs.log

Update.
Prior to seeing your reply I ran disk cleanup then scf /scannow which found and repaired errors. I also renamed software distribution to old, rebooted and tried to install ie 11 again. No luck. Then I read your post.
c:\windows\ie11_main.log is not there
c:\windows\logs\cbs\cbs.log attached.

Another update.

I noticed there were 5 optional updates so decided to install them. After rebooting I tried to install ie11 using the off line installer and I had success.

I guess I am all fixed now or do you want me to run any tools and generate reports?
