I suggest that you follow writhziden's advice -
Be sure to back up all important files as nothing is full-proof, i.e., there are no 100% guarantees that windows.old will be waiting for you.
As far as keeping your system running well, clean out temp files, IE, Firefox cache, etc... general items. Use CCleaner if you wish, but not the Registry Cleaner option!
