Well first off, if anything stopped the bug checks, it was removing the faulty stick from the system and changing the timings/voltages to their factory advised settings. If you were still crashing however, and rolling back the video driver helped, it's probably just a buggy version. AMD's kernel-mode drivers for the most part, especially on a very old model (4xxx), are pretty crap.
