[SOLVED] Cumulative updates failing since June - Server 2016 1607

Hi softwaremaniac,

I've been working on the remaining three servers. I deleted the offending directory off of all three. One of the servers successfully installed updates but the other two still did not. Can you continue to help me with this?

The two that have now succeeded had stopped working in November and the other two have updates installed through May, 2018. My mistake was thinking the issue was the same for all four servers and jumping to a different one to troubleshoot.

I attempted to fix the problem on both servers with the Windows Update troubleshooting tool, the wureset program, and Windows Repair (All-in-One), but didn't have any luck.

Today the downloading of updates froze at 95% and I watched every hour for it to stop so I could capture the CBS logs and the setupapi.dev.logs.

Thanks for any further assistance you can give me.

Hi!

Did you actually let them error out before attaching the logs? Like I said, attaching them prior to failure is only going to record normal WU operation and I need to see the failure in the logs to be able to assist. :)

Yes, I checked the download progress every hour and the first time I saw the download stopped I pulled the logs at that point. Although the behavior varies, this time the downloads stopped they displayed error 0x800705b4.

Hi softwaremaniac,

I wanted to update you with some good news. After doing some cleanup I was able to install March CUs on all four servers with a stand alone install. I am going to try Windows Update again for April, but if it still does not work I'm pretty confident that I will continue to do stand alones, which is fine.

What happened was I realized a few weeks after you identified that ServerWeb directory under system32 that I had used that directory to place a bunch of 0k files. I did so because I was getting warnings from my backup software. It was looking for certain files there related to a system state backup. What I thought was a benign fix for a benign problem wound up breaking the Windows Update process on several servers. After I realized what happened I cleaned up the remaining 0k files I had created in other directories.

After this stand alone installs worked on all the servers. I'll see after April's CU release if Windows Update is functioning better on the servers, but if not I'll continue to do stand alones.

Thanks again for identifying the ServerWeb directory as being a problem. I would not have made the connection otherwise.

Ok thank you. That's great! If there are still issues the first thing I'll try is removing Windows Defender as you previously suggested.
