[SOLVED] Dreaded 80073712

SFC will not run, Windows Update is broken. I'm sure you know both of these from the post title.

I cannot Just simply Restore/Reformat.

System had a HDD fail, I was able to clone the HDD and save the information but obviously it has done some damage. Can this be fixed?

Right, let's start with the bad news - this doesn't look easily fixable at all. All the Windows Update data is stored in the COMPONENTS hive of the registry. It's a little known hive because it only deals with Windows Update. When that hive becomes corrupt, Windows Update fails.

You have a corruption in your COMPONENTS hive, as reported both by SURT and SFCFix:

SFCFix COMPONETS Collection

  1. Download SFCFix.exe using the following link and save the tool to your Desktop: [sfcfixdownload]Download SFCFix[/sfcfixdownload]
  2. Download SFCFixScript.txt and save this to your Desktop as well: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u...eric/Collect/COMPONENTS/SFCFixScript.txt?dl=1
  3. On your Desktop, you should now see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFixScript.txt.
  4. Drag the file SFCFixScript.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  5. SFCFix will now begin to upload your COMPONENTS hive to our server.

I broke down and reinstalled Windows 7. I just need to get this system running and back to a customer. Thanks for the help.
 
Sorry for the wait, but unfortunately that was the only option here.

Your COMPONENTS hive should be at least 20MB - it's normally around 35MB on most systems, sometimes more. Your hive was 256 KB - far, far too small. It's impossible to repair that.

Glad you managed to fix the computer though, sorry I can't be more help!

Your help was greatly appreciated. I knew I was in bad shape and I would have rather did a clean Install although it is more work and more cost to my customer which was something I was hoping to avoid. Thank you for everything. I wish I had more knowlege of the inner workings of Windows so I could contribute here.
