Apologies, missed the fact that there was a Page 2 on this thread. Windows Update seems to be working but the Turn Windows on or off dialog box is still empty. Not super concerned about this but would like to fix it if possible. Thanks.

I need to verify something. Are all windows updates installed? I want to ensure that you checked for Windows Updates and installed any critical/important updates. I want to ensure that there are none that are showing that need installed.

Please let me know.

Yes, the two errors mentioned in the thread installed successfully on May 16th. And since then, every other update has installed successfully.

Thanks. Do the following again please.

System Update Readiness Tool (SUR)
1. Download and run the following file.
2. When it asks you if you wish to install, please answer yes. Note: It could take 15 minutes or more to run. Please don't cancel.
3. You will get an Installation Complete screen when it's done running.
4. Please attach the log from the following location. C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log
Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following command into it, press enter
wusa /uninstall /KB:2656373

4. Let me know if it says it was successful or if there are any errors.

Thanks. Please do the following. I believe I know what the issue is but need to collect some info.

FRST Registry Search
1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 32-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
3. Copy and paste
KB2656373 into the Search box and click the Search Registry button.
Search.JPG

3. When the scan is complete a notepad window will open with the results. Please copy and paste the contents in your next reply. If for some reason notepad doesn't open the file should be
saved on your desktop named Search.txt.

Your software hive looks good. Thanks for the info. Now we need to check the COMPONENTS hive. Please do the following.

Retrieve Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to SendSpace and just provide the link here.

That hive looks good too. So it may be the files. I'd like to try something. Please do the following.

Step#1 - Capture Process Monitor Trace
1. Download and run Process Monitor. Leave this running while you perform the next steps.
2. Re-run SURT just like you have in the past. If you need instructions they are in Post#29.
3. Stop Process Monitor as soon as SURT finishes. You can simply do this by clicking the magnifying glass on the toolbar as shown below.
11908d1430506241-windows-updates-fail-repeatedly-stop-jpg

4. Select the File menu...Save... and save the file to your desktop. This is likely the default location. The name (unless changed) will be LogFile.PML. This is fine.
5. Zip up and attach the LogFile.PML file as well as your CheckSUR.log.

Hi BrianDrab,
Your suggestions have proved to be problematic. If I run ProcMon and then re-run SURT, ProcMon crashes. If I try to let ProcMon finish running before starting SURT, I get an error which says "A system or application resource limit has been exceeded that prevents Process Monitor from capturing additional events". At this point the ProcMon application has recorded 33,186,155 events. My PC is relatively old and running 32-bit Windows so limited in memory. Any other suggestions?

Thanks for the info. Try the following. Open up Process Monitor and then immediately stop it so it's not chewing up memory.

Select the File menu and choose Backing Files...
Use virtual memory is likely selected at this point.
Select "Use file named:" and type in c:\sysnative and click OK.
You will get a message letting you know that this will take affect on your next capture.

Now try performing the steps.
