Hello,

I made a new fresh installation of Windows 7 x64 on a Virtual Box. Overall I found the procedure not linear/error free as it was in the past when it came to
Windows Updates. Eventually, there are still two updates I am not able to install:
- (Important) 2020-1 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB4534310)
- (Optional) 2020-1 Preview of Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB4539601)

Pointless to say that I've tried several guides or tipps and installed several KB* to fix the above problems without success.

Trying to install the KB4534310 gives me the error: 0x8024200D

Ready to be helped :)

Thank you

There is no need to quote my message.

FRST Registry Search
  1. Click the Start button and choose Control Panel.
  2. In the upper right corner ensure the View by: is set to Category.
  3. Select the Programs group.
  4. Click the Turn Windows features on or off link. This will bring up the Server Manager or Windows Features dialog.
Note: This loads your components hive which is what we want. Please keep this dialog open while you perform the remaining steps. You can minimize it if you wish but keep it open.
  5. Download the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop:
64-bit: Downloading Farbar Recovery Scan Tool
Note: Your antivirus program may report FRST incorrectly as an infection. If so, disable the real-time protection when downloading and running FRST.

  6. Right-click on the file FRST64.exe and choose Run as administrator.
  7. Copy and paste KB4534310 into the Search box and click the Search Registry button.
  8. When the scan is complete, a message will display that 'SearchReg.txt' is saved in the same folder FRST was started from. Notepad will open this file also. Close Notepad and attach the file 'SearchReg.txt' to your next reply.
  9. You may close any remaining open windows now.

Step 1:
Warning: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Do not run this script on another machine.
  1. Download the attachment fixlist.txt and save it to your desktop.
  2. Right-click on FRST64.exe and select "Run as administrator".
  3. Press the Fix button.
  4. The tool will now process fixlist.txt.
  5. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
  6. When finished, a log called Fixlog.txt will appear in the same directory the tool is run from.
  7. Attach the logfile Fixlog.txt to your next reply.

Step 2:
Reboot the machine.
Try to install KB4534310 only and report the result.

With the last attempt, one removes all keys inside the registry that have the "KB4534310" string in them. Isn't it?

Yes.
Attach the zipped cbs.log to your next reply.

Attach the file C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CbsPersist_20220122074619.cab to your next reply.

Provide the Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again. Note: If you find that you need to reboot and are unable to because this is a server then try Option#2 below.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to Gofile or WeTransfer and just provide the link here.

Option#2 (only if you are unable to follow the previous instructions)

  • Please download the Freeware RegBak from here: Acelogix Software - Download products
You will find it at the bottom of the page that the link brings you to.
  • Go ahead and install this program and accept all the defaults. After the last install screen the program should open.
  • Click the New Backup button. Accept the defaults and simply click Start.
  • When it says Finished successfully, click the Close button.
  • This will bring you back to the main screen of the program. You will see one entry in this list with the date that you did it. Right-click on this line-item and select Explore Backup...
  • This will bring you into the folder where the backup was made. You should see a Users folder and a Windows folder along with a couple other files. Double-click on the Windows folder to open it. Then open the System32 folder and then config folder. You should see around 6 files in here, one of which is named COMPONENTS.
  • Copy the COMPONENTS file to your Desktop. If the COMPONENTS file does not exist, please fetch it instead from C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS.
  • Now right-click on the COMPONENTS file that is on your desktop and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Then please upload the zip file (COMPONENTS.zip) to your favourite file sharing website (it will be too big to upload here). Examples of services to upload to are Gofile or One Drive or WeTransfer and then just provide the link in your reply.
  • You can close any open windows you have as well as the RegBak program now.

What is stored inside the "components" file?
Some of the registry settings for components that Windows needs to work properly.

Congratulations, it worked out. I really appreciate your help.

If you want the FixLog.txt at this point let me know.

Not only could I install the KB4534310, but also other optional KBs and other important ones that came out with additional checking.

Some side notes:
1) Before step 2 (but after rebooting), I checked my list of services and BITS wasn't running. I turned it on and restarted the PC again. I don't know if it was part of the problem.
2) The tool FRST64.exe performs a check when you start it and probably updates something. It would be useful to know what type of checks it performs.

Some questions:
3) The COMPONENTS file was a binary one. How could you read it? Is there a tool?
4) What was the problem in my case?
5) I have another VM with Win7 with similar problems but different KBs and I would like save you and the forum from the burdle to fix it. How could I perform alone the steps you did?
6) I have an ISO of Win7 and I followed the usual steps installing it and tried to update as many KBs as were available. I know that Win7 has reached its end of life support. At the beginning, when I checked Windows Update the first time it didn' work and I had to follow some instructions on the net installing at some particular KBs before using Windows Update properly. It seemed Microsoft has changed something in the "stack of SHA.." or something like that.
In a few words, when I have to install Win7 nowadays, which steps do I have to follow? Is there a guide on the net?

Thank you.

Great. If there are no WU issues anymore I don't need the file fixlog.txt.

1) No
2) FRST checks only if an updated version is available and applies it as far as I know.

3) The tool Regedit.exe, part of Windows, can import it.
4) A previous update did not add the missing registry values or the missing registry values got lost somehow.
5) Best to start a new thread on this forum. Each machine is different and so the fixes can be different as well.
6) Not that I know off. If your mean the SHA-2 support issue you can read this article: https://www.sevenforums.com/news/42...gning-support-update-windows-7-sept-10-a.html
If you don't want to mess things up, just start a new thread.
