From The future of Internet Explorer on Windows 10 is in Microsoft Edge | Windows Experience Blog:

Microsoft Edge has Internet Explorer mode (“IE mode”) built in, so you can access those legacy Internet Explorer-based websites and applications straight from Microsoft Edge. With Microsoft Edge capable of assuming this responsibility and more, the Internet Explorer 11 desktop application will be retired and go out of support on June 15, 2022, for certain versions of Windows 10.

Note: This retirement does not affect in-market Windows 10 LTSC or Server Internet Explorer 11 desktop applications. It also does not affect the MSHTML (Trident) engine. For a full list of what is in scope for this announcement, and for other technical questions, please see our FAQ.

See the referenced article for additional information.

The article doesn't specifically mention Java. However, Edge has not supported Java from the start. Personally, I don't remember how many years ago I uninstalled Java from my PC. In the event you do require Java, it can be used on Edge with IE-mode.

I'm glad IE is finally getting retired; it's a shame that the Trident engine isn't either.

It says something about ActiveX controls (JAVA and Silverlight).
But I'm starting in the IT world and not very knowledgeable.
In my coutry the government websites all work with JAVA applets, so everyone needs to use IE to "deliver" files.

Then they'll need to use "IE-Mode" otherwise those applets aren't going to work. And they're really still using Java applets?!

Sadly yes..
Makes for alot of annoyances when companies need to send their tax files..
Sometimes it's just a matter of checking if the website is on the exceptions list, but sometimes some governmental organizations let their certificates expire, and you can't download online forms.. Fun times.
