[SOLVED] Issue with KB5009543 Windows 10 Update

Hi,

Creating a restore point is not necessary before a repair install. Please make only a (manual) backup of your important data to be sure it is safe.

You can use this guide of @britechguy as well to perform a rapair install.

This forum section (for Windows Update problems) is limited to responding, to get help from other helpers please start a new thread in the Windows 10 section.

I just completed the Windows 10 Repair Install. The Windows version is now 21H2 (OS Build 19044.1526). Windows Updates indicates "you're up to date" and four Realtek driver updates were successfully installed. I checked the System32\config folder and the DRIVERS folder size is now 9,120 KB indicating its successful repair.

For cleaning up, can I safely delete the SoftwareDistribution.bak, SoftwareDistribution.bak1, and SoftwareDistribution.OLD folders that were created in December and January in my attempt to fix the update issue? There are also many items that were created in the process of resolving the update issue (FSS.txt, WUpdate.txt, WUReset.bat, CBS.zip, AdwCleaner.txt, MTB.txt, Speccy, etc.). Can I delete all these now and are there other files/folders that have been created and are no longer necessary to keep?

Hi,

Yes, you can safely delete the renamed SoftwareDistribution folders. You can remove the used tools and log files as well.

Follow the instructions below to remove
577bf0efb8088-FRST.png
FRST and all the log files.
  • Rename the file FRST64.exe to uninstall.exe and run it as Administrator.
  • This will remove all files and folders created by FRST and the tool itself.
  • To complete this the system must be restart.

I was about to follow your instruction to remove FRST and all the log files but I could not find the FRST64.exe file. So, I found the link previously posted here on February 9 (Download the 64 bit version: Farbar Recovery Scan Tool Link) that took me to the Bleeping Computer website. I clicked on the Download Now 64-Bit Version button and, within a couple of minutes, there's a pop-up that Windows Defender has found a threat: Trojan:Script/Oneeva.A!ml. I tried to delete the FRST.exe file from the Download folder in Windows Explorer but wasn't able to so I ran MS Defender as prompted. It "found no threats" and the FRST.exe file has now disappeared. I am now running the online ESET scanner but it usually takes quite to while to complete. Any thoughts as to what I should do next to determine if my PC is still infected? Thanks.

Hi,

FRST64.exe is not digitally signed, therefore it is flagged by Windows Defender as harmfull, but FRST is safe to use. It is not necessary to run the ESET online scanner, this is an false positive.

I downloaded the FRST64.exe file again and renamed it to uninstall.exe. MS Defender popped up with a prompt not to run but knowing it's been flagged incorrectly, I selected run anyway. Everything went okay and the PC subsequently restarted.

Can I safely delete the catroot2.old folder as it was recreated as catroot2. Also, in the Windows (C:) directory there is now a windows.old folder. Can that be safely deleted? There is also a SFCFix folder and AdwCleaner folder that I believe can be safely deleted.

With the Windows 10 Repair Install completed, does the entire Registry get recreated as new? As I previously indicated in a prior post, I have a few saved "back ups" of the Registry so can I delete them all now and create a brand new one?

P.S. Can I safely delete the windows.iso (disc image file) that was created in Windows Explorer? It's a large file 4,492,992 KB and I can save it to a flash drive if necessary.

Hi,

You can delete the folders: catroot2.old, SFCFix and AdwCleaner manually. You can also delete the ISO file, in case you ever need it again, download the latest ISO with the Media Creation Tool.
With a repair install the registry is recreated, so you can delete the old backups and create a new one. But it is safer to make a complete image of the systemdrive.

Use

Disk Cleanup to remove the Windows.old directory.
  • Click the Start button and in the search box, type cleanmgr to open Disk Cleanup.
  • Select the systemdrive (usually C:\) and click OK.
  • Now click on the Clean up system files button.
  • Check the Previous Windows installation(s) box and click OK.
  • Now disk cleanup will remove the Windows.old folder.

It took a while but now it's working...and calculating how much space will be able to free up.

I noticed that the Lenovo PC (in Devices and Printers) image has a yellow triangle with exclamation mark and the Status indicates Needs Troubleshooting-Driver is unavailable-Driver Error. Any thoughts on this and should I right-click and run the Troubleshooter?

Hi,

Yes, run the Troubleshooter and let me know the result of this.

Troubleshooting Report / Issues found

In Device Manager / Other Devices / PCI Device (Yellow Triangle)

Hi,

Open the startmenu and type devmgmt.msc to open the Device Manager.
Do you see any yellow exclamation marks in here?

If so, please make a screenshot of it and post it into your next reply.

Hi,

  • Open Windows Explorer and browse to the C:\Windows\INF folder.
  • Right-click on the file setupapi.dev and choose Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Now the message will appear, "Windows cannot create the Compressed (zipped) Folder here. Do you want it to be placed on the desktop instead?"
  • Click on the Yes button here.

  • Attach the file setupapi.dev.zip in your nex reply.
