No Updates on Win7/64 Home

That's what I was trying to say before. I do not support going back to a factory restored system. The hive would be so different than what it should be currently that it will likely cause you more grief. At this point the only thing I can offer is a complete reload of your system.

Ok Brian, you've convinced me importing the factory restored CBS hive is a bad idea. But could we please try a repair restore first? I think in the past I was asking for updates which of course it can't do. I just tried without asking for the updates and got as far as it recommending that I uninstall the ATI Catalyst Install Manager and the ATI Catalyst Control Center before proceeding. At that point I cancelled. Seems removing and reinstalling these can be a bit tricky. I have an AMD Radeon HD 7560D with drivers atikmpag.sys.

Thank you once again -Ed

Yes, it would have been great. I succeeded in uninstalling the AMD Catalyst items. The option to upgrade without updates fails suggesting I try "with updates". Attempt with updates gets to "Gathering files, settings, and programs" and says "Setup can't continue. Restart the computer and restart Setup. When prompted, try getting the latest updates." It downloads 1089 KB. of presumed updates. Iterating the procedure does not improve the progress.

So now, we go to the factory restore and piece together a system with new program loads and my personal data? I have the factory restore with most updates. Please lead on...

Thanks,
Ed

Yeah unfortunately it appears so. I want to ensure that you have backed up your personal data somewhere before we reload your machine. Have you?

I have a thumb drive that a recovery service did at the crash. I think my 4/30/2015 entire system image is less damaged. I believe I need to backup the personal data separately now. Do I select "let me choose" in backup and restore and uncheck Include a system image...? I can do this on the USB External 2TB drive.

Ed

That is the correct process. I hope your computer is not to damaged for this to work though. Let's ensure you have your data backed up before we continue.

Ok, I've checked Backup data for newly created users, Ed's Libraries, and Eudora Drive (E).
Unchecked is OS (C), HP Recovery (D) and Include system image.

Good. It looks like you have an HP Recovery Partition that we can utilize to restore your machine. Please try the following. Steps may not be exact because each system build may be slightly different.

HP Computer Restore:

  • Restart the Computer.
  • As the computer is booting up Tap F10 repeatedly on the keyboard until the recovery menu appears. This will start HP’s PC System Recovery.
    a. You must tap F10 before the Windows Logo appears on the screen. If the Windows logo appears then restart the process.
  • Select the: Perform Standard System Recovery, click Next and then click Yes.
  • Read and follow each window that appears on the screen. This will guide you throughout the whole restore process.
  • After the System Recovery is complete the computer will restart. Windows setup will how appear.

Factory restored system disk drive installed. All updates installed. Kaspersky Anti-virus active and Malwarebytes installed.

This was previously prepared based on HP recovery DVD's. New 2TB drive.

You have to re-install any programs that you need that aren't on the machine. The backup only captured your data which is most important. The order you re-install doesn't matter.

To restore your data it's as simple as double-clicking on your backup file that you made on your USB drive and restoring. A good tutorial is at the following link.
