HP DV6 7331SA Running Win7 Ultimate. No outstanding windows updates
12GB RAM, SSD 250GB, HDD 750GB

So this all starts with an attempt ot install IE11. The PC currently has no working version of IE and no mention of IE in the Programs and features or Windows features. There are however IE directories with some files in both program files\ and program files (x86)\ The files are from around 2016 so I presume its the remnants of an early version of IE. Its ages since I have even contemplated using it.

I tried to install IE11 with the standalone installer
The first thing the stand alone installer does is look for updates. Actually, I think its looking for the Windows Update prerequisites. They are not actually mentioned in the list of Windows updates (programs and features->View Installed UPdates) but when I try to install them, I get told they are already installed. So I tried uninstlaling and installing each one which went fine until I got to KB2729094 which reported an error when trying to uninstall. So attempt the install again to see what the log says about KB2729094
.....
00:29.858: INFO: Download for KB2729094 initiated. Downloading http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=258385 -> KB2729094_amd64.MSU.
00:29.858: INFO: Waiting for 1 prerequisite downloads.
00:51.308: INFO: Prerequisite download processes have completed. Starting Installation of 1 prerequisites.
00:51.308: ERROR: Error downloading prerequisite file (KB2729094): 0x800c0005 (2148270085)
00:51.402: INFO: PauseOrResumeAUThread: Successfully resumed Automatic Updates.

However, looking at the install directory, it is clear that download is successful and the file (KB2729094_amd64.MSU) is present. An attempt to install it at this stage results in KB already installed. So I reckon IE11 fails to install because KB2729094 is installed, is not recognised as installed, gets in the way of the attempted installation and cant be uninstalled!

SFC \scannow reports it has fixed corrupted files (log in rar CBS-4SN-1)
If I run it again immediately it reports corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them (log in rar CBS-4SN-2)
And the next run reports it has fixed corrupt files just like in the first run! (3 logs included)

Absence of replies suggest we all agree its in the too hard bucket and it is certainly taking too much time
Anyway, I did a repair install of Win7 last night and the 173 updates are currently chugging away.
Hopefully come sunset I'll have a working machine again.
Thanks for your interest and, if you have the problem, I suggest you go straight for a repair install (assuming nothing simple like a restore or backup works)

Hello and welcome,

It may take some time before someone replies in your thread. We are just volunteers using the spare time to help others.
As your issue is solved with a repair install this thread will be marked as solved.

Thank you and apologies for failing to mark as solved.
Sadly the repair install did not fix the IE install issue so I will post in a new thread

Good, we move on in the new thread.
