I have had a problem for the past three months where the Monthly Quality Rollup updates fail to install properly on my Dell Latitude D820. This computer is set up to boot either Windows 7 or Windows XP. Once the Monthly Quality Rollup updates have started to install and then the computer reboots, it gets to about 86% completed and then rolls back the update. This started in October with KB3197868 an a reported error code 80004005. I have searched the web for a solution to this problem and I have tried many things. I put a smaller Hard Drive into my computer that I had upgraded from about 18 months ago, and I was able to get the January Monthly rollup to install, but it won't on the larger (500GB) drive. Attached is the SFCFixView attachment CBS.zip output:

Hi there Matt,

Code:
2017-01-18 13:35:42, Error [0x018009] CSI 00000070 (F) Done with generic command 10 (0x0000000a); CreateProcess returned 0, CPAW returned S_OK
Process exit code 112 (0x00000070) resulted in success? FALSE
    Process output: [l:8995 [4096]"BFSVC: BfspCopyFile(C:\Windows\boot\PCAT\bootmgr, \\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolume1\Boot\bootmgr) failed! (Attempt 1 of 60) Last Error = 0x70

Looks like this error may be caused by Windows failing to update the boot manager. Are you using the stock Windows 7 boot manager for your dual boot setup?

I don't remember which boot manager I am using. I set this up many months ago and my memory isn't that good. Any idea how I can check which boot manager I am using? I wouldn't be surprised if I was using another boot manager, perhaps installed from the Windows XP installation disk when I added the Win XP partition.

The screen that comes up on boot says:

Windows Boot Manager

Chose an operating system to start, or press TAB to select a tool:
(Use the arrow keys to highlight your choice, then press ENTER.)

Windows 7
Microsoft Windows XP

To specify an advanced option for this choice, press F8

Tools:
Windows Memory Diagnostic

ENTER=Choose TAB=Menu ESC=Cancel

Please run Disk Management (diskmgmt.msc) then post a screenshot of the partition layout.

Here it is. Note the 100MB unallocated partition I put there hoping to expand the "System Reserved" partition, but I wasn't sure how to move the unallocated partition so that I could expand the "System Reserved" partition, so I just left it alone. My update problem preceded the addition of the unallocated partition. I got the impression that I needed to expand the "System Reserved" partition, but that wasn't consistent with my ability to update the older and smaller hard drive.

Thanks!
Matt

It looks like I used NeoSmart Technologies EasyBCD to help in modifying the Boot Configuration Data file. That program doesn't seem to be present on the older, smaller boot drive that I had on the computer on which I am able to install KB3212646. Perhaps EasyBCD has modified or replaced the boot manager causing my problem?

Would you be able to rebuild the boot configuration with the stock Windows 7 bootloader for testing? It should be possible to add Windows XP back to the list with EasyBCD after the update has been installed.

I followed the instructions "Manually Fix the Boot Configuration (Windows 7 /Vista). It booted directly to Windows 7 and then I tried Windows Update.

Once again it fails when configuring updates (96% - farther than it had gotten before) after the restart and it reverts to the configuration before the update was applied.

When it was installing the update I got a "Low Disk Space" warning on "System Reserved (F:)" I don't remember ever seeing this with the previous update attempts, but based on some other information I had seen on the web, it was why I was trying to increase the "System Reserved" partition by another 100MB, but as I mentioned before, I didn't finish the task.

Okay, that helps!

Please move the BCD.old folder from that System Reserved partition to somewhere else for safekeeping.

After it has been moved, check how much free space is available on the System Reserved (F:) drive.

I'd like to check what the size of the NTFS log file is on that partition.

Okay, that seems fine.

Let's check the list of files on the drive.

From what you were doing, it looked to me like the "System Reserved" partition was absolutely out of space, so I got a little bold and downloaded EaseUS Partition Master and I moved the 100 MB unallocated partition next to the "System Reserved" partition and I expanded the "System Reserved" partition so that it is now 192 MB.

I then installed the problematic January Security Monthly Rollup for Windows 7 (KB3212646) and this time it installed successfully!

Now I just need to put my old BCD file back, and I think I will be all set!

Thanks for the great help!

Good job! :thumbsup2:
