Hello,

Windows Server 2022 Standard 21H2, Build 20348.1668

Machine has failed to install the Cumulative Update for a few months now. Gives the following Event Viewer error:

Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x8024200B: Security Update for Windows (KB5034770).

I've followed these instructions... Windows Update Forum Posting Instructions

I've tried resetting Windows Update components, sfc /scannow, Windows Update Troubleshooter, chkdsk, bitsadmin /reset /allusers. I've been unable to run DISM - the server doesn't have internet access and when trying with an ISO I downloaded from Microsoft Volume Licensing (filename SW_DVD9_Win_Server_STD_CORE_2022__64Bit_English_DC_STD_MLF_X22-74290.iso) I keep getting: "The source files cannot be found". i.e. from these commands:

DISM /Get-WimInfo /WimFile:F:\sources\install.wim
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:Wim:F:\sources\install.wim:2 /LimitAccess

I ran ComponentScanner but it didn't find anything.

I've pretty much run out of ideas, so any help would be much appreciated.

Here is a download link for the ComponentScanner output, the zipped CBS folder, and, in case you need them, the zipped COMPONENTS file and the Component Based Servicing registry hive: Sysnative - Google Drive

Many thanks.

Hi and welcome to Sysnative,

Open an elevated command prompt, run the following command and copy and paste the result in our next post.
Code:
certutil -hashfile C:\Windows\WinSxS\msil_microsoft-windows-n..r-slbmanagerservice_31bf3856ad364e35_10.0.20348.1607_none_b7fd3063d6d1df0d\Dcm.NetworkManager.DataModels.NetworkAllocationDataModel.dll SHA256

Hey Maxstar, thanks for your message. Here's what I got when running that command:

Code:
c:\>certutil -hashfile C:\Windows\WinSxS\msil_microsoft-windows-n..r-slbmanagerservice_31bf3856ad364e35_10.0.20348.1607_none_b7fd3063d6d1df0d\Dcm.NetworkManager.DataModels.NetworkAllocationDataModel.dll SHA256
CertUtil: -hashfile command FAILED: 0x800703ee (WIN32: 1006 ERROR_FILE_INVALID)
CertUtil: The volume for a file has been externally altered so that the opened file is no longer valid.

Thank you.

Hi,

Step 1. Download
6530fbb0f4101-56f31e53c97da-SFCFix.PNG
SFCFix and save it to your desktop.

Warning: This fix was written specifically for this system. Do not run this fix on another system.
  • Save any work you have open, and close all programs.
  • Download the attachment SFCFix.zip and save it to your desktop.
  • Drag the SFCFix.zip file over the SFCFix.exe executable and release it.

  • SFCFix will launch, let it complete.
  • Once done, a file will appear on your desktop, called SFCFix.txt.
  • Post the logfile (SFCFix.txt) as attachment in your next reply.

Step 2. Run the following DISM command and post the result. If it fails attach a new copy of the CBS log.
Code:
DISM /cleanup-image /RestoreHealth

Thanks again for your help here. I attach the SFXFix.txt

I ran the DISM command, but I got:

Code:
c:\>DISM /cleanup-image /RestoreHealth

Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool
Version: 10.0.20348.681

Error: 87

The cleanup-image option is unknown.
For more information, refer to the help by running DISM.exe /?.

The DISM log file can be found at C:\Windows\Logs\DISM\dism.log

c:\>

I also attach the new CBS.log

Thanks.

Please attempt to update. If it fails attach a new copy of the CBS logs.

Amazing! The install reached the end and it now waiting for a reboot. I'll need to find a good time to reboot it, so I'll report back asap. Thank you so much.

I'll be back within the next 24 hours hopefully.

Great, keep us posted. If the update fails after the reboot please attach a new copy of the CBS logs.

I salute you, sir.

The machine is now happy on the February Cumulative Update! :D Many thanks for your effectiveness.

I've sent a small Donation (I wish I could give more tbh)

Hi,

You're welcome. Glad to hear this server is up-to-date now, and thanks for your donation to Sysnative.(y)
I will mark this thread as solved.
