I would first like you to try resetting IE if you haven't already by following the steps here: support.microsoft.com/kb/923737. Leave Delete Personal Settings unchecked. Is it more stable?
Try launching IE in "Safe Mode" by pressing Windows Key + R, and typing iexplore -extoff
None of the above helped? Please run a SFC scan:
SFC Scan
Click on the Start
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each
Just a note that I posted two dump files last night in my previous post before this one, and continued with your other instructions this morning. I reset IE, and it didn't help; so, I ran the two commands and here is the cbs.txt file: View attachment cbs.zip
Sadly, I do not have the time to look at this properly this evening. I am very sorry!
Hopefully I should get some time tomorrow evening.
Once again, I am very sorry for the wait.
Kind regards,
Stephen
EDIT - I have just tried downloading the dumps so I had them ready but they do not seem to be there... Both links say the file has either been deleted or moved.

That's ok about the wait. And oops about the links. I did move them... to my recycling bin, by mistake. I kind of did an overzealous cleanup of my desktop, and inadvertently deleted the incorrect files. I've restored them, but I'll create the links again to make sure. Let me know if there's a problem with them, once you get the time tomorrow.
I am really confued by the dumps. I'm seeing a lot of info, but it differs so much in each dump I'm not sure what to make of it... I can't tell if what I'm reading is causing the hang or not. I'm sorry, but they don't seem to be proving useful. I have gained some knowledge personally, and do have some ideas, but nothing revolutionary or ground breaking. Sorry!
I would like you to clear all cookies in IE as well. Control Panel --> Search Internet Options --> Internet Options --> In the Browsing History section, click Delete --> Ensure Cookies and Website data is checked --> Delete.
Out of interest, I'd like you to create a new user account and run IE in that account. Does it freeze and hang like it normally does?
Does this website ring any bells to you - tory-usa.com. That may not be the full URL, but does it ring a bell? It appeared in the dumps.
Hi Stephen, I ran both fixes and neither one solved the problem. I notice I now have the symbol for 'Compatibility View' in my address bar now, though; it says, "websites designed for older browsers will often look better, and problems such as out-of-place menus, images, or text will be corrected". Does this mean I've gone backwards with IE by doing the fix?

No, tory-usa.com doesn't ring a bell at all. Thanks for checking everything for me. As an aside, I did have a problem with CBS Logs before, btw; it was the reason I began posting at Sysnative. My computer ran fine after that was fixed, though - until the last few months, that is when I began having the problems I'm currently experiencing.
Hmm, things are getting worse since doing the Fixes. This is the message I'm getting now when I try to check my email. What should I do? Should I do a system restore? Update: a few minutes later... my mail is back. For now. :noidea:
I tried a couple of different things yesterday. First I uninstalled Adobe Flash Player - it didn't fix the problem, so I reinstalled. I had read on the internet that the ActiveX in the new version of Flash Player can cause IE9 hanging. I also ran the 'Problem Reports and Solutions' in Vista, and in the report it said:
Sorry for the delay, I've been on Work Experience this week and as a result have been a little tight for time. I'm back on holiday now, so can take a look at this properly now.
This is a very strange problem. The FixIt's I asked you to run have effectively reverted Internet Explorer back to a clean install. Any add-ons have been disabled and temporary data has been removed. It's almost a clean install of Internet Explorer.
BTW - Is Mail working now? If it isn't, please let me know!
Can you describe exactly what happens when you use IE now please? I want to know exactly what I'm dealing with now. :)

I don't think that Bonjour Print Services is responsible for the crashes you are having, it's just something else Vista picked up. If you like, you can uninstall and reinstall Bonjour Print Service. It probably won't solve the issue though.
And no, it's not possible to get IE 10 on a Vista system. IE9 is the highest availible version.
Let's try something. I would like you to uninstall IE9 from your system by following the steps here: Uninstall Internet Explorer. It does say IE8, but it works for IE9.
This will revert your system to IE8. Does this work correctly? Does it hang? If it does, then IE9 is not at fault, it's something else on your system. If it works OK, then IE9 is the issue.
You will then have a clean version of IE9 on your system. Take a backup of your favourites before you do this, just in case. They can be found in C:\Users\your username\Favourites\
IE is still acting pretty much the same as when I originally posted about it. The homepage is hanging or crashing. And, the website that mentioned that I shop online at is still acting strangely - things like hanging then not responding, and I lose information I type in. Maybe the fix to that problem would be to stop buying online at that website. :grin1: Seriously though, it is a trustworthy site that I've been using for a couple of years now. Also, I don't think I can blame any of those sites I mentioned, like my homepage, because they work fine on an ancient XP desktop computer that I have.

I don't think I'll bother doing anything with the Bonjour Print Service. And thanks for answering my question about IE10.

Hi Stephen, I have an update for you. I went to Control Panel/Programs and Features and uninstalled Internet Explorer. In the programs list it was called 'Internet Explorer 9 (with DEP)' (I believe - something about DEP). I don't recall ever seeing the 'DEP' part before. So I uninstalled it and IE disappeared from the programs list. I restarted my computer, and clicked on Help to see what version of IE I have now, and it says Internet Explorer 9.
I went to Programs and Features again to see if I could uninstall it, but IE isn't shown in the programs list anymore. My computer is stalling more, and is hesitant. I'm not really sure if I actually uninstalled Internet Explorer 9 or not - doesn't seem so since I'm... here. ha
Sorry, I missed that part. I had a concussion in June, and my ability to concentrate is still very poor on some days. Bet you never heard that one as an excuse.
The newly reverted IE7 worked much better than IE9 has been working lately. It was a little slow, though. I reinstalled IE9 (64-bit version btw); and there might be some miniscule improvements, but it's still hanging and non-responsive on those same sites as before.
Don't worry about it. Nope, I'm fortunate to say I've never had a concussion. I've knocked myself out by hitting my head - still have no memory of that day - but that's another story!!
I've just re-read that CBS thread - I vaguely remember that from when it was happening.
If you remember, I got you to run a SFC scan earlier in this thread. I had that checked out by both Tom982 and Richard (niemiro) and they both reported it was showing no issues. So that's good.
This is very weird... The fact IE7 works and IE9, even after a clean re-install of it, doesn't work properly.
Could you send me the URL of the main problem sites? I don't think it is the sites fault, because as you say, they work fine on your old XP machine, but would be interested to run them on my Vista machine also running IE9.
Do the sites work/load fine in a alternate browser such as Google Chrome or Firefox? If you haven't tried one of them, could you please try it for testing purposes. You don't have to use them permanently, just to test.
If they work fine, then it's IE's fault. I do have another analysis tool that I can run, similar to ProcDump, but I am still working out some kinks with it on Vista. It's really easy to use on Windows 7, but is more of a pain to configure on Vista! Hey ho, by the time you get back to me, I should have figured it out!

I'd say that sounds like a concussion; but if it was only for one day, maybe not.

I downloaded Firefox. I'd be almost tempted to switch over to it, if the homepage hadn't crashed there, too. ha Here's the pop-up message I got when I homepage stopped running when I tried to open it:
I have an odd thing to mention about IE7. On my homepage, I'm supposed to be able to type in my postal code for my region and a window opens with the tv listings on it. On IE9 the tv listings won't open, it just refreshes to my homepage; and on Firefox, the listings won't open either, but just refreshes to the homepage. But yet on IE7 they will open - no problem? Could it be a security issue, where IE7 has none (ie. security)? I used to be able to open the tv listings on IE9, btw. Hopefully that info offers something helpful.
I thought the same, but the doctors didn't say it was, so I'm not quite sure. It was 6 years ago now..
Anyway, I digress
The fact Firefox is not loading the page correctly is very odd. It is starting to seem more like a networking issue. Hmmm..
Right, I was going to get you to run a load of command line commands, but to make your life easier, I've written a batch file for you. This will run the commands automatically for you :)
XPerf Download
XPerf, whilst having a strange name, is a tool that allows me to monitor and record your system performance so I can look for issues. I need you to download and install it.
When you install this, you will be greeted with a screen to choose what to install. Check only Windows Performace Toolkit under Common Utilities, so the screen looks like this:
Move on to the next stage :)
Batch File
Download the attached file: dee_can.bat and save it to a memorable location
Navigate to the file, right click it and choose Run as Administrator. If you don't do that, the program will fail
The file will first check for a registry key. If this key is found, it will move on. If the key is not found (more likely), then it needs to create this key. It will prompt as such. The computer will need to reboot to add this key, so press any key to reboot the system
Once the machine has rebooted, run the batch file again.
The batch file will now perform some basic networking tests. These may take a while.
Now, the file will tell you that XPerf is ready to start. It also gives the location of the folder containing the trace log. Read the screen and press any key to launch XPerf and begin capturing. Once ...Capturing... is displayed, XPerf is capturing
Now Xperf is running, use the computer as you normally would. Launch IE and browse the internet, loading up the pages that are known to crash. Leave IE on the "Not Responding" error for a few seconds, before trying to recover IE, or do whatever. Basically, use IE and watch it crash. Let it crash/hang a few times.
Now stop XPerf from capturing by going back to the batch file and pressing any key. This will stop XPerf. Now XPerf will perfom some post-capture tasks, this may take some time. Wait for it to finish
Navigate to the folder where XPerf saved the logs (it should be called LogFiles and located on your Desktop). Zip the LogFiles folder up and upload it to Dropbox or similar.
Any issues, let me know :) I've tested this on my Vista machine, and it works fine.
I thought the same, but the doctors didn't say it was, so I'm not quite sure. It was 6 years ago now..
Anyway, I digress
Oh good Lord - I just noticed you're 15 years old. I'm astonished at the young geniuses fixing our computers here at Sysnative! Now since you got knocked out, basically at age 9, and recovered in one day, I'd still say it was a concussion just that you were so young your healing abilities were excellent. But I also digress.
I'll follow those instructions you posted some time today, most likely. Will let you know if I have any problems. Thanks.
