Current issues: Second screen not detected, many programs not being able to run due to graphics card driver possibly being corrupted, no audio, etc.
Tried Nvidia's steps for troubleshooting, tried using DDU to remove driver and reinstall (both did not work)
Tried to update Windows (Saw driver update for Nvidia in update log that hadn't gone through and i tried to update, it ran into a problem halfway through and then automatically undid the changes)
Tried to reset Windows (Recovery that kept personal files, got to 86% and then ran into a problem, then automatically undid the changes)

I'm new here, but I've browsed various threads already trying to solve this and it seems like it requires a very specific fix.
Here are all the files required for diagnostic and the driver.zip files that seem to be needed for the fix as well as the message on the graphics card's properties textbox.

Thanks!

Hi and welcome to Sysnative,

Upload the SCHEMA.DAT file
  • Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\SMI\Store\Machine and copy the SCHEMA.DAT file to your desktop.
  • Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To > Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named SCHEMA.ZIP on your desktop.

  1. Download DRIVERS.ZIP and save to your desktop.
  2. Right-click on it and select Extract all.... Make sure the "Show extracted files when complete" is checked and click Extract.
  3. Now we have the DRIVERS file that we will be using to replace your current one.
  4. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\config
  5. Right-click on the current DRIVERS file and select rename. Rename it to DRIVERS.bad.
Note: If you get an error that the file is in use, reboot your computer and then try again.
  6. Take the file from the Drivers folder on your desktop and paste it into C:\Windows\System32\config

Afterwards reboot the System and attempt to update. If it fails attach the latest CBS logs and the following logfile.

Upload the setupapi.dev.log file
  • Open Windows Explorer and browse to the C:\Windows\INF folder.
  • Right-click on the file setupapi.dev.log and choose Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Now the message will appear, "Windows cannot create the Compressed (zipped) Folder here. Do you want it to be placed on the desktop instead?"
  • Click on the Yes button here.

Rebooted and ran one of the nvidia updates, it immediately detected the second screen without needing a reboot. Nice.

there seems to be rather large windows update going on right now as I'm rebooting a second time, been at the "Getting Windows ready Don't turn off your computer" screen for about ~20 mins now.

should I just let it run overnight?

I would also wait at this stage a forced reboot may cause other issues! When a clean-up task is set during the update process it may also take some time to complete!

I suspect the system has gone into some kind of (sleep) hibernation mode, so let me know the result after the next reboot.

It's only the dotted circle spinning on a grey screen with "restarting" under it but that might be the same thing

On the second screen it's all black and i can move around my cursor

This is a common issue with an dual-screen setup, please reset the system using the RESET button and let me know the result after the next boot!

Interestingly, the place where the reset button would be is just a metal plate and a light, Can't exactly take it apart to see if it's actually there right now
i could just power off using the usual power button?

For reference the pc is a Dell G5 5090.

The only button on that is the power button itself, looks like

It seems there's no other option than to perform a hard reset!

How to perform a hard reset?

Performing a hard reset usually fixes many problems and also drains any residual power that maybe causing the problem.

Turn off the computer.
Disconnect the power cord.
Disconnect all external devices like USB drives, printer cables and media cards (SD/xD).
Press and hold the power button for 15-20 seconds to drain residual power.
Connect the power cord and turn on the computer.
