Windows 7 aborts on opening file in "File Explorer"

OS: Window 7 Prof N; System 64-bit
Hardware: VMWare Fusion 11 (running Windows 7 as VM) under host MacBook Pro 2011 OS High Sierra

Hello,

Recently, I am experiencing Windows 7 aborts (BSOD?) when I try to open any file (e.g., .docs, .xlsx) through "File explorer". This happens sporadically. I could work for several hours, days, without any issues, and then suddenly, Windows 7 would abort on any file that I try to open through "File explorer". I reboot Windows 7 and then the cycle repeats. I am unable to identify the cause of this occurrence.

So far, I have ran sfc /scannow and no errors are reported. I aslo ran chkdsk and no errors were reported.

Otherwise, my Windows 7 appears to work well with all my applications.

Hi,

This does not sound like a BSOD, in which Windows would end up rebooted and you would get an error code like PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA visible on the screen. In case of any form of remote connection which typically happens with a vm, you'd lose the connection and can't reconnect until Windows rebooted.

Does the vm happen to have issues with booting up at times? I noticed startup repair events.

Many thanks for you prompt response.

The vm (Windows 7) does not pose any problems when booting at any time. However, before VMWare Fusion 11 crashes, it does ask if I want a "crash report generated". The last report is too large to attach. Please let me know if this report would help. I can send it via weTransfer, if needed.

Repair events you noticed may be related to "VM Repair Tools" that I executed because I thought that some features related to the host/guest OS setups may have been corrupted. Also, I did repair the MS office which I also thought may have caused the crash.

I also attach AdminEventsLog for the past 2 days which shows some errors as well. I am not sure if this will helps resolve the issue.

Hello again,

I should have added that as far as I have observed, the VMWare Fusion aborts occurs when the file I try to access is on the host side (shared folder), not on the guest side (Windows 7). This may explain the "lost connection" you mentioned previously?

Those startup repair events aren't related to any third-party tools, they come directly from Windows. It's hard to say what exactly they're about if you haven't had any issues with booting lately.

The "lost connection" I mean is really when Windows itself completely crashes and is rebooting altogether, if one has a vpn connection to Windows for example, then you'd lose that vpn connection until Windows is back online.

Since this problem does not seem to be connected to a BSOD issue, I'll move this to the Windows 7 forum.
