• Still running Windows 7 or earlier? Support for Windows 7 ended on January 14th 2020. Please review the thread here for more details.

Windows 7 freezes sometimes shuts down on its own.

There's a lot of errors, services and drivers that cannot be started in your Event Viewer. All of these could explain the sudden instability of your system. I'm going to bed right now, but tomorrow I'll take a look at each one individually and list you the drivers you have to reinstall and such. You might have to reinstall the NVIDIA drivers, but since they aren't listed on Lenovo's website, it's going to be a bit hard since you cannot really install the ones directly from NVIDIA website with a dual GPU (integrated/external) setup.

Alright that's good. When you ran the installation for the Intel graphics, it extracted the content in C:\DRIVERS\VIDEO, right? You'll go back in the Device Manage, right-click on the Intel device under Display Adapters, and select Update Drivers. From there, you'll select the second option, which is to choose manually the driver location on the system. Enter the location C:\DRIVERS\VIDEO and click on Next. Are the drivers getting installed after that?

Alright, that's good then. Since the installation of the chipset drivers, is it less bad or it still freezes? Maybe you can test it for a day and see how it goes?

Yes, I will go about my normal work. I should be able to tell soon enough whether there is significant improvement, and i'll let you know.

Thanks.

After like 20 minutes my screen froze and i had to restart manually ... upon restart it froze after about 5-10 minutes.

Alright, let's look at the issue under another angle. The following test can take a while to complete. Up to you to decide if you want to start it now or overnight.

GSmartControl
Follow the instructions below to test your hard drive health with GSmartControl:
  • Download GSmartControl and save it on your Desktop;
  • Extract the content of the GSmartControl .zip archive and execute gsmartcontrol.exe;
  • Identify your drive in the list, and double-click on it to bring up it's window (usually you'll find your drive by it's size or it's brand name);
  • Go in the Perform Tests tab, then select Extended Self-test in the Test type drop-down list and click on Execute (this test can take a few hours to complete);
  • Once the test is over, the results will be displayed at the bottom of the window. Please copy and paste these results in your next reply;
  • Also, go in the Attributes tab and if you have any entries highlighted in red or pink, copy and paste their name in your next reply (or take a screenshot of the GSmartControl window and attach it in your next reply);

Ok, I tried to run the scan with my computer connected to my docking station and when i came back in 20 minutes to check on it the computer had restarted itself.

Then i tried again without the docking station and I was able to get to where the scan said 90 % complete 0 mins ETA. It seemed stuck here for awhile - i'm not sure if it was done. Anyway i then went to open browser and my computer froze again.

Upon powering off and turning on again my computer automatically ran chkdisk the results of which i do not understand.

So thats where i am now ... do i need to rerun the scan or are the old results somewhere.

First time it happens to someone (program closes and they ask for a log) so I can't really tell. If you re-open it, does it asks for a new test or load past results?

It opens like it did before no results pop up ... i'm rerunning the scan right now .. i did see a view output box at the bottom of the scan page.

that you continue.

Windows has finished checking your disk.
Please wait while your computer restarts.

At least you didn't have bad sectors, so that's good. We'll wait for the results of the GSmartControl test.

You can leave it be, it can take a while. Hence why I suggested you to maybe do it overnight.

It is still stuck at same spot ... it is strange because says ETAis 0 sec and estimated duration as 80min and was going fine but now stuck for last 3 hours.

Sorry I just saw your reply. Did the test finally complete, or did it stay stuck?
