Windows 8.1 failed to boot after an automatic update

The previous fix run seems to have done the job already.
Check Windows Update again and provide a screenshot of all available important updates.

Windows Update looks similar ro before. I tried the Defender update only, as per previous although I know you've said that this may not work due to other anti virus software being installed. And it didn't install. I didn't want to try the others without checking with you first. I don't want to undo your work.

And I forgot to check the reason for the Defender update failing. Sorry about that.

From Sunday (15th) I am going to be tied up with work for a few days and won't be able to try anything whilst I'm away. I don't want you to think that I'm ignoring any posts that I don't respond to in that time. I might be able to try things on Sunday before the job starts.

Try to install KB890830 only and report the result.

No problem. We will wait.

That update seems to have installed OK, as per attached screenshots.

Great.
Disable the realtime-protection of Avast.
Try to install KB2267602 only and report the result.

Hi,
I came across a post on an Avast user forum which describes a similar situation at:
Update for Windows Defender - KB2267602
So this morning I uninstalled Avast, restarted the computer and then ran Windows Update. I selected KB2267602 only and tried to update.
It gets to "Preparing to install" with the progress bar at about 5-10% across and then the computer locks up, no response to mouse, keyboard or brief presses of the power button. I tried leaving it for several hours but there was no change.

I held the power button down until the computer switched off and then started it back up again, gave it a restart straight away then logged in and tried Windows Update with just KB2267602 selected and it locked up again at the same point...

I've made some progress... maybe.

I found a utility to clean up after uninstalling avast, from avast.
Avast Uninstall Utility | Download aswClear for Avast Removal
I then tried running mpam-fe.exe as a manual method to install KB2267602, as per:
Latest security intelligence updates for Microsoft Defender Antivirus and other Microsoft antimalware - Microsoft Security Intelligence
(found via Can I manually download windows defender update KB2267602 (definition 1.191.2236.0)?)
But nothing seems to happen.

So I ran Windows Update (just KB2267602) it gets to the end of the progress bar OK (so no longer locking up) but then reports a failure and error code 80246002, as per attached.

Then I restarted and went straight to Windows Update (just KB2267602) and the computer has locked up again, looking exactly the same as previous post.

Perform a new scan with FRST to get the current state of your system.

FRST Scan:
  1. Right-click to run the tool as administrator. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  2. Note: Ensure that the Addition.txt check box is checked at the bottom of the form within the Optional Scan area.
  3. Press the Scan button.
  4. Please wait for the tool to finish. It will produce two logfiles called FRST.txt and Addition.txt in the same directory the tool is run from (which should be the desktop)
  5. Post the logfiles FRST.txt and Addition.txt as attachment in your next reply.

  1. Download the attachment fixlist.txt and save it to your desktop.
  2. Right-click on FRST.exe and select "Run as administrator".
  3. Press the Fix button.
  4. The tool will now process fixlist.txt.
  5. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
  6. When finished, a log called Fixlog.txt will appear in the same directory the tool is run from.
  7. Post the logfile Fixlog.txt as attachment in your next reply.

Hi,

After the problems I had last time when FRST updated itself I again ran the old version and disconnected from the network to prevent it auto-updating. Just thought I'd better mention it in case you were expecting me to use the latest version.

And here is the resulting fixlog file.

I don't know if it's related but I don't seem to be able to get Defender running. I see the flag with the cross in the system tray which then tells me that there are two important messages, but when I click on "Turn on virus protection (Important)" it opens a File Explorer window to C:\Windows\system32 and there's still the flag and still the suggestion to "Turn on virus protection (Important)".

The same thing happens if I try the "Spyware and unwanted software protection (Important)" option.

I have just spotted that a little clock face comes up on the menu if I open that again.

Open the "Control Panel" and click on "Action Center".
Post a screenshot of the window that appear.

Hi,
Screenshot of "Action Center" attached as 'actioncentre_d20210825t0834.png'
Screenshot of what happens when I click on "Turn on now", for either Spyware or Virus protection attached as 'turnonnow_d20210825t0835.png' - it's the Explorer window as described previously.

Hi,
Fixlog.txt attached here. I've still not allowed FRST.exe to update itself, with no anti-virus on that computer at the moment I'm keeping it off the network. If you need the latest version put on there I will do it via USB. I understand that using USB memory sticks can be exploited by some viruses but it's a compromise.
Thanks,

Hi,
I had to use the computer the other day and when I did so I re-installed Avast. This morning I uninstalled it again, and ran the avastclear removal utility again so it should haver been in the same state as it was. Since it looks like the recent fixlist's have been just checking for the state of the computer I ran the one that was sent previously first (as post #35) and had a look at the fixlog's. There is a slight difference so I've attached that log here as 'Fixlog_d20210828t1322.txt'. I then ran the new 'fixlist.exe' (as per post #37) and the log is attached as 'Fixlog_d20210828t1335.txt'.
I hope the extra steps I've taken aren't going to cause problems for your investigation.
