[SOLVED] Windows 8.1 update

Hello,

I have a problem with windows update, recently windows update keeps telling me to restart my laptop to finish the update but when i restart it keeps telling the same.

Please try the following:

DISM /RestoreHealth Scan

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Right-click on the Start
    w8start.png
    button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
  2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter

    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

  3. When DISM finishes scanning your component store, zip up and attach your CBS log to your next post:

    C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

If the zip file is larger than 8MB, please use a file sharing service such as OneDrive, DropBox, SendSpace, etc. and include the link with your reply.
 
The log looks good.

Clean Boot

  1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search. Or, if you are using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, and then click Search.
  2. Type msconfig in the search box, and then tap or click msconfig.

  3. On the Services tab of the System Configuration dialog box, tap or click to select the Hide all Microsoft services check box, and then tap or click Disable all.

  4. On the Startup tab of the System Configuration dialog box, tap or click Open Task Manager

  5. On the Startup tab in Task Manager, for each startup item, select the item and then click Disable.

  6. On the Startup tab of the System Configuration dialog box, tap or click OK, and then restart the computer.

Export registry as hive

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
    button and in the search box, type regedit
  2. When you see regedit on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When regedit opens, using the left pane, navigate to the following registry key and select it by clicking on it once.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\

  4. Once selected, click File > Export....
  5. Change the Save as type: to Registry Hive Files (*.*)
  6. Name this file SideBySide (with no file extension) and save it to your Desktop.
  7. Right click on the SideBySide file and choose Send To -> Compressed (zipped) Folder.
  8. Attach the zip with your reply.

I'm still getting the ur upgrade is ready to be instaleld pop up which is quite annoying, but i have never installed it. One time though, when i wanted to restart my laptop it automatically started ugrading so i shut down the laptop quickly and restarted it to prevent it.
 
That is probably what is causing the persistent prompt to restart.

I take it you do not intend to ever upgrade to Windows 10?
 
Okay, let's disable the Windows 10 upgrade prompt and clear the reboot registry entry.

SFCFix Script

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put [CODE][/CODE] tags around the log to break up the text.

Clean Up Windows 10 Upgrade Files
  • Open Disk Cleanup by clicking the Start button . In the search box, type Disk Cleanup, and then, in the list of results, select Disk Cleanup.
    If prompted, select the drive that you want to clean up, and then select OK.
  • In the Disk Cleanup dialog box in the Description section, select Clean up system files.
    If prompted, select the drive that you want to clean up, and then select OK.
  • In the list, select the box for Temporary Windows installation files, then click OK.
  • In the message that appears, select Delete files.

After both these steps are complete, restart your computer, then try checking for Windows Updates again.

When doing the second step, i dont see the delete temporary windows installation files. However there is a option to cleanup windows update
 
I have done the steps yesterday and havent gotten the update to windows 10 message since then. Windows update also tells now that there are no updates available.
