Windows could not check for updates-error code 80070490

Hello guys,
I am happy that found this great forum and hope somebody will be able to help me.
Windows Update error code 80070490 appeared on 20 September 2013 and message "Windows can't check for updates". I use Windows Vista Home Basic 32 bit, Service Pack 2 on laptop Dell Studio 1535, IE9. I tried Microsoft Fix It, System Update Readiness Tool, Windows Update Diagnostics DIAGCAB file, sfc/scannow, renaming of the SoftwareDistribution folder and etc., but Windows still can't update. The last successful update was on 13.09.2013. The CheckSur file showed this:

I am so sorry for the late reply as already discussed. I have taken a look at your error to assess how we are going to fix it. Often we are able to take a shortcut and jump straight to a fix, but this will not be possible here. Here I must manually reconstruct the key using data from your own computer before I am able to use that data to perform a fix. Please bear with me on that. I need a registry export.

Please open an Elevated Command Prompt: https://www.sysnative.com/forums/wi...-prompt-window-windows-windows-vista-7-a.html

Copy and paste in:

reg EXPORT "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\Packages" "%UserProfile%\Desktop\RegistryExport.reg"

press enter and then zip up and upload RegistryExport.reg from your Desktop.

Hello again :)

Thanks so much for that! Well, I've created a fix for the issue. Now we import it and see if it works. If it does, great, if not, I reassess and edit it slightly to make it work. Sometimes it takes a couple of attempts to perfect, sometimes I get it first time. We'll just have to wait and see!

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFixScript.txt, and save this to your Desktop.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.txt.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl + C) and Paste (Ctrl + V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please.

Agh! That's my fault. It's a bug in SFCFix itself. I'll post a fix tomorrow and hopefully that will sort it out (can't now as at school at the moment unfortunately). I'm really sorry about that. Basically I recently introduced a very large amount of extra code into SFCFix (v1 --> v2) and I'm still ironing out the last few bugs.

Awesome! Please re-run the System Update Readiness Tool and post a new CheckSUR.log. Please also retest Windows Update.

Hello Richard,
thank you so much for your help, you are great :thumbsup2:.
I retested Windows Update and it found and installed successfully all 41 important updates :dance:.
I re-runed the System Update Readiness Tool and here is what the resulting ChechSUR.log file showed:
