Windows fails each time for 18 important updates

Hi Tom,
I have a trial version of ESET NOD32
I think I successful...

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU]

Hi, Claude. You had AVG installed. Did you run the AVG installer? I took another look at the logs you provided for me and see that I missed you also had Norton 360 installed. Having such a combination (and allowing your son to install software before all the problems are solved) can add to issues.

Please decide which antivirus software you are keeping on the computer and then uninstall the other programs, also running their respective cleanup tools. I'll provide links to each. Of course, you will only run the two for the antivirus you are not keeping.

ESET: ESET Removal Tool
AVG: AVG | Download tools and utilities (Use the AVG Remover(32bit) 2014)
Norton 360: Download and run the Norton Removal Tool to uninstall your Norton product/URL]

After you have settled on one antivirus program and removed the others, please let us know the status of the computer.

Hi,

AVG has been uninstalled before I installed ESET.
I don't see Norton in my PC... I looked in All programs list, also in pannel! I made search whit the word "Norton"... nothing!
Anaway, I used the 2 tools that you suggested (Northon and AVG... they did something like a ramoval, whit pc restart after each.
My son did it whitout my permission, hencefort he didn't touch my pc!

Now, the pc is fast as it was after your help... but now it failed whit 20 importants updates!

Thank you,

Claude

ps What do you think about ESET antivirus software... I take it because you used it for online scan in first!

Hi, Claude.

For a licensed/paid antivirus solution, I like ESET antivirus. The important aspect in deciding on an antivirus is how it works on your computer and how comfortable you are with the features. Now that the computer is yours (not your employers), the decision is up to you.

As Tom isn't available for a few days, please be patient. Since you had to do a repair with the Windows Vista DVD, it may be necessary to re-do some of the previously requested instructions but let's leave that to the Windows Update experts.

Hello Claude,

I am so sorry for the huge delay here. I will not be taking your thread. Difficult networking issue though.

First, let's start with a basic test. Can you please open up Internet Explorer (it's got to be IE, no other browser will test what I need it to), and attempt to download the following file: http://download.windowsupdate.com/v9/1/windowsupdate/redir/muv4wuredir.cab

Does it download correctly, or do you get some error message?

Thank you.

Richard

Hi Richard,

I downloaded it without problem... I opened it and had this following informations :

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
-<WuRedir xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/msus/2002/12/wuredir" redirectorId="3600"> <Protocol reportingServerUrl="http://stats1.update.microsoft.com/" elementVersion="1" clientServerUrl="https://update.microsoft.com/v6/"/> <SelfUpdate elementVersion="1" selfUpdateUrl="http://update.microsoft.com/v10/1/windowsupdate"/> -<UpdateServices elementVersion="1"> <Service ServiceID="7971f918-a847-4430-9279-4a52d1efe18d" AuthorizationCabUrl="http://ds.download.windowsupdate.com/v10/1/microsoftupdate/redir/muauth.cab"/> </UpdateServices> </WuRedir>

Thank you for your help,

Claude

Hello again Claude :)

Can you please follow the Fix-It located here: How do I reset Windows Update components?

Close the Fix-It which pops up, and use the one embedded within the article.

It's actually the very first time I have ever recommended that troubleshooter (it's just a tiny bit useless in most situations :p) but actually, for your particular problem, it may well help.

I'll also try to dig an old article out of some archives. Microsoft used to have a really great KB article on fixing the sort of networking error you have, but unfortunately, in their infinite wisdom they've been around, collected together all the Windows Update KB articles and deleted them, to be replaced with their troubleshooter. Which fixes virtually nothing.

Richard

EDIT: Note to self, please ignore.

Hi Richard,

I followed your first instructions...

The report explains that the problem of windows update has not been set!
I didn't do your second recommendation "I'll also try to dig..." because I don't understand clearly!

I try if windows update is working now... but it seem that isn't, it searching since many minutes but nothing happens!

So I'm still in nothingness...

regard,s

Hello again!

Can you please allow Windows Update to complete its search (or start it again if you cancelled it). After the reset above, all of it's precached state has been deleted, so absolutely everything has to be recalculated, so first search will take up to half an hour.

Richard

Yes... you're rigth because just after my last post it found 20 updates, like before!
I'm trying to install and after I'll tell you what's happen!

Thank you,

Claude

I already know that is still failed... whit the same error's codes

Code 80070490
Code 2B33

Hello again!

Can you please upload summary.txt from C:\Program Files\Microsoft Sql server\90\Setup Bootstrap\log (and C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Sql server\90\Setup Bootstrap\log if it exists).

Thank you.

Richard

This is turning into a really strange issue. It shows in your logs as a networking issue, but I don't understand how a networking issue can affect such a specific set of updates. Let's see if a manual install works. I'll just test one particular update. Please attempt to download and install this update: Download Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2 on Windows Vista Service Pack 2 and Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 from Official Microsoft Download Center

Does it work?

Richard

Hi Richard,

It worked again, but at the third try... because at some choice that it gived during the installation I was not sure wich one I had to take and I changed my choice until it work!
At the end, it said that the installation was succesfull.
Also, when I look in Windows update it is said that there is never had updating or search update.
If I look at the installed updates i didn't see this one neither the other one that I install just before.

Thank you for all,

Claude

Hello again Claude :)

Very well done on getting that installed, excellent work!

I would like to explain the situation to you. Windows Update errors have two main reasons for failure. The first is those I call "root causes", and the second is those I call "damaged updates".

A root cause is some corruption somewhere, something which breaks Windows Update. But once we've fixed all the root causes, some updates, those updates which tried, then failed, to install, are, on occasions, left in a damaged state. There are no root cause corruptions remaining, so no new updates will be damaged, but those few still fail. Here, we download the standalone installer. That avoids the damaged state, and the updates install successfully. Future updates are unaffected.

On your machine, Tom and I have found and fixed some root causes. We have fixed all of them. When we test the remainder with the standalones, they install fine. This is very strong evidence that they are only caused by subsequent damage, not more undiscovered root causes.

However, I cannot be absolutely certain. I've looked and looked, and cannot see any reason why the problem should reoccur, but I cannot absolutely guarantee it. Therefore, what I suggest is that we install all the updates manually this time (I'll provide links tomorrow), and if it reoccurs, you can come back to this thread. I'm pretty sure they won't, but I've never had a thread quite like yours before, so it's impossible to be certain.

Richard

Hi Richard,

It's a very good news, I think so!
If I well understanding... when we will manually installed all the other updateds in the list, perhaps there will be no problem whit the following!
Good!
Since I install the last update (Sql server 2005...) my pc became to be very slow again, I'm not sure there is a link bethween this two things.
Anaway, I look forward to seeing how it goes whit the other updates...

Thank you again,

Claude
