I came across this forum while looking for a solution for a Windows Update issue I'm experiencing on a VM. I've cloned the VM to work on the issue, but so far using the really helpful information on this forum I've not yet been able to resolve my issue.

The issue is on a Windows Server 2019 1809 VM on which Windows Cumulative Updates are not installing, although .Net Framework Cumulative Updates are installing just fine. The update appears to install OK, but on reboot it rolls back the update, and is failing with error code 0x80070003.

SFC is not finding any issues, a DISM ScanHealth does and notes it as being repairable, but the "RestoreHealth" repair fails (regardless of whether this is done with or without a source specified).
Code:
C:\Users\sysadmin>dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool
Version: 10.0.17763.1697

Image Version: 10.0.17763.3287

[===========================93.4%======================    ]
Error: 0x8024402c

DISM failed. No operation was performed.
For more information, review the log file.

The DISM log file can be found at C:\windows\Logs\DISM\dism.log

I've added the CBS and DISM logs for both the DISM ScanHealth/RestoreHealth as well as the logs for when the update installs and fails.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Hi and welcome to Sysnative,

Step 1. Download
56f31e53c97da-SFCFix.PNG
SFCFix and save it to your desktop.

Warning: This fix was written specifically for this system. Do not run this fix on another system.
  • Save any work you have open, and close all programs.
  • Download the attachment SFCFix.zip and save it to your desktop.
  • Drag the SFCFix.zip file over the SFCFix.exe executable and release it.

  • SFCFix will launch, let it complete.
  • Once done, a file will appear on your desktop, called SFCFix.txt.
  • Post the logfile (SFCFix.txt) as attachment in your next reply.

Step 2. Run the following DISM command and post the result. If it fails attach a new copy of the CBS log.
Code:
DISM /online /cleanup-image /RestoreHealth

Sorry for the delay in replying. This fix was put in place, but I had subsequent issues which presented similarly, and building on from the previous fix was able to grab the files from elsewhere, and patch them in. Once this was done, I was able to successfully complete a DISM RestoreHealth, and then got a clean SFC scan, DISM scan, DISM AnalyzeComponentStore and StartComponentCleanup... the Windows Update however still failed. This time however because the logs were a lot quieter of other errors, was able to see an entry referencing that a driver could not be installed with the Windows Update, so it rolled back.

I was bit mystified by a Windows Cumulative Update for the operating system itself failing on account of a driver, but it nonetheless gave me a direction. Checking the setupapi.dev.log (in %systemroot%\INF) showed failure entries for an "oposdrv" in the driver store ("C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\oposdrv.inf_amd64_de33f8bfeffa3fef"). This seems to be a Microsoft shipped generic driver available with the desktop grade Windows versions too. I checked on a similarly patched same version Windows Server OS, copied the files to the broken machine... and et voila, the Windows Update now installed properly.

Thanks @Maxstar, appreciate the help 🤝🍻 I've learnt quite a bit through this exercise, and going to apply some of what was learnt through this exercise into resolving some DISM errors I've seen on other machines. I hope the Windows Update Academy opens up again so that I can learn more, and similarly assist others.

Hi,

You're welcome and there's no need to apologize for the delay, I'm glad you were able to resolve the problems. And yes there was a driver issue as well which caused the rollback, I wanted to look into that after the issue with DISM was fixed.

I hope the Windows Update Academy opens up again so that I can learn more, and similarly assist others.
