I've tried following the steps to boot into memtest but nothing worked. Returned to Windows as usual.

Gary, I'm thinking can we just skip to the step you were gonna give me without backing up data? At this point this has become too complicated for me to follow. I'll manually back up my data the best I can to the external. If all fails in the end, I'm thinking of nuking this PC and start fresh. Let me know what you think.

Sorry my mistake with the script, it should have read ....

I forgot that SC.exe uses a different command to select a manual start, than when you do the same job manually.

So let's reset things manually.

Click Windows Key + R to open a Run dialog
Type services.msc and hit OK
Scroll down to ... Volume Shadow Copy ... and double click on it to open it
From the drop down list against Startup Type: select Manual
Under the Service Status: section click on the Stop button
Click OK
Exit the Services window

What we think is happening, is that your updates are failing on reboot, due to a corrupted startup, we found an entry in one of your earlier logs that suggested this, but when we got you to perform a boot log with ProcessMonitor, the fault did not present itself, so we looked elsewhere. We didn't find anything conclusive when we did.

What we're now looking at doing is performing a Startup repair,to see if that resolves things, but your problems with creating a System Image suggest that the problem could also be due to hardware, which is why I wanted you to do RAM and Disk tests.

If it is your hardware, then performing a Startup repair is a potentially more dangerous procedure than I previously thought, and you could well end up with an unbootable machine, so I'd much prefer you to run the Ram and Disk tests before taking the risk.

In any case, if your hardware is faulting/failing, then performing a Startup repair is unlikely to have a positive result, nor would re-installing your OS.

It's not a tool I'm personally very familiar with, so I'll need to consult with someone who is more familiar with it than me to see what's going on.

Gary,

I'm so sorry I just did something stupid. I finished memtest and it showed a big green "PASS" sign on my screen. Restarted the computer and forgot to retrieve the report from the usb drive. I formatted it but now its size seems to shrink to only 248 mb (originally 14.5 gb).
Though i wanna ask something from this pic. Why does it show that only 1024 KB is free on my main drive?

USBs sometimes do that. To fix it so that you get the correct size back again, follow method 1 on the following web page ... USB Pen Drive 16GB Shows 4MB, How to Solve Easily?

To check your hard drive forget about the Seagate tool, and do the following instead ...

GSmartControl
Follow the instructions below to check your SMART status with GSmartControl:

Download the portable version of GSmartControl and save it on your Desktop;
Extract the zip file to your Desktop. Open the folder gsmartcontrol-1.1.3-win32 which should be located on your Desktop and double-click gsmartcontrol.exe to launch the program.
Identify your drive in the list (if recognized by the tool), and hover your mouse over it.
You should see something called: SMART status. It will either read: Enabled, in which case you should do the following:
Double-click on it to bring up its window (usually you'll find your drive by its size or its brand name);
Go to the Self-Tests tab, then select Extended Self-test in the Test type drop-down list and click on Execute (this test can take a few hours to complete);
Once the test is over, the results will be displayed at the bottom of the window. Please copy and paste these results in your next reply or take a screenshot;
Also, go in the Attributes tab and if you have any entries highlighted in red or pink, take a screenshot of the GSmartControl window and attach it in your next reply;
Please note: If the SMART Status reads: Unsupported, stop and let me know.

Your drive received a command to shut down whilst the test was running, the most likely reason for this is that your computer is set to shutdown/hibernate/sleep if it is inactive to save power.

So we need to change your power settings to make sure it doesn't do this.

Open Search
Type Edit Power Plan into the search window
A Edit Plan Settings window will open (please note down your existing settings so we can reset them once the disk test has completed).
- For Turn off the display, set the Plugged in value to Never
- For Put the computer to sleep, set the Plugged in value to Never
- Click Save changes

Now please try running the disk check again.

.... so I'm going to assume your disk is OK, and we can attempt a Startup Repair.

So ....

To perform a Startup Repair

Open Settings > Update & Security > Recovery
In the Advanced start-up section, click on Restart now
The Advanced start-up screen will open ...
- Click on Troubleshoot
- Click on Advanced options
- Click on Start-up Repair
  - Click on your User Account
  - Enter your Password
  - Click Continue

Start-up Repair will analyse your computer and fix any start-up problems it finds.

You may get a message back saying ... Start-up Repair couldn't repair your PC ... which can mean that there's nothing needing repair.
If you get this message, please click Shut Down
Restart your computer.
Please attach the following log to your next reply ... C:\Windows\System32\Logfiles\Srt\SrtTrail.txt

No, I don't get frustrated (only with my own incompetence sometimes), if there's a problem then there's also usually a solution, if you haven't yet found it, you've just got to look harder until you do.

So looking over your logs now, the .... CbsPersist_20220624163658.log .... looks to be the one that's going to tell me most.

Looks like it's going to take a while, back as soon as I've got something for you.

Lot of file errors in the log, so let's see if we can cut down the number that we're going to have to fix manually.

Right click on the Start button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
When the Command Prompt Window opens, copy and paste the command below into it, and press Enter
sfc /scannow
Wait for the scan to finish.
When finished, attach the file ... C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log ... to your next reply.
Note ... If the file is too large to attach, use a file sharing service.
Examples of services to upload to are WeTransfer and TransferKit and SendFileOnline
