Good morning,

Having some issues with Windows update on a Windows 2019 VM. Nothing I've tried so far has resolved the issue. I'd greatly appreciate any assistance with this issue.

So far, I've tried:
1. SFC scan
2. DISM scan
3. Renaming caroot2 and Software Distribution folders
4. Resetting FSRM service (fsutil resource setautoreset true C:\)
5. Resetting all Windows update components
6. Running the SFCFix found here

I've probably tried more things, to be honest, but I've gone through so many possible resolutions that I'm basically at my last legs here. I attached the CBS logs from the most recent failure with this error code.

Appreciate any and all assistance.

Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Download the attached fixlist.txt and save it to the Desktop.
Note. It's important that both files, FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work (in this case...the desktop).
3. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
4. Press the Fix button just once and wait. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
5. When finished FRST64 will generate a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please post the contents of it in your reply.

Thanks, could you please try and run SFC again and then provide the CBS log if it fails?

SFC scan came back clean this time, with no integrity violations - is there anything else I need to do before trying to search for/install updates again? Thanks!

Please try and update again. If it fails then please provide the latest CBS logs.

Unfortunately, it seems that they've ran into the same error again, interestingly it looks like the error only occurs when you actually attempt to update? Let's try the following steps:
  1. Please run the FRST fix script from earlier in this thread - this ensure that any corrupt transaction files have been cleared
  2. Please run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth - I know you've attempted to run this in the past but just want to see if it finds anything or crashes with some more detailed information.
  3. If DISM runs without any errors then please provide your COMPONENTS hive using the following instructions:
Retrieve Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to a file sharing service. Examples of services to upload to are Dropbox or OneDrive or WeTransfer and then just provide the link in your reply.

Thanks, it seems like DISM failed for the same reason as why your updates are failing.

Please open a command prompt window and enter the following commands:

Rich (BB code):
dir %systemroot%\servicing\version /s
reg query "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\Version"

Please post the output in your next post.

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put [CODE][/CODE] tags around the log to break up the text.

Afterwards, please open an elevated command prompt and run the following command:

Rich (BB code):
sfc /scannow

If successful, then please follow these instructions:

Capture Process Monitor Trace
1. Download and run Process Monitor. Leave this running while you perform the next steps.
2. Try running DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth just like you have in the past.
3. Stop Process Monitor as soon as it fails. You can simply do this by clicking the square icon on the toolbar as shown below.

4. Select the File menu...Save... and save the file to your desktop. This is likely the default location. The name (unless changed) will be LogFile.PML. This is fine.
5. Zip up and provide the link to the LogFile.PML file as well as your CBS.log Examples of services to upload to are Dropbox or OneDrive or WeTransfer.
