[SOLVED] Windows Update fails 0x80073701 Server 2016 Datacenter

It is trying to install KB4338822 but this has been going on for a long time it has failed on the cumulative updates before it too. The most recent retry of the updates gave me 0x800705b4.

Also, I've tried renaming software distribution with no problem but when I try to rename catroot2 the Crypto service won't stay off...it just restarts itself immediately. With some good timing I managed to get the folder renamed but after I do that I can't open any MMC, I just get a denied because of a certificate error.
 
Remove Update Manually
 1. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following command into it, press enter
wusa /uninstall /KB:4038782

4. Let me know if it says it was successful or if there are any errors.
 
It will be a bit got another fire to put out at the moment. I'll post the results as soon as I can.
 
alright it is uninstalled and I have a reboot scheduled for later tonight...I'll follow up with you tomorrow.
 
It looks like the update installed this time. I'll have to reboot the server to make sure it applies but I can't do that right now. I'll schedule a reboot for tonight.

Also, do you have any idea why the crypto service keeps restarting itself when I shut it down? Everything I've read online says to stop that service and rename the catroot2 folder but if I rename that folder all the MMC functionality breaks and the folder doesn't get recreated. I know in older versions of Windows that worked.
 
I am not sure why the Cryptographic Service behaves in such a way on your Server. Is there anything relevant in the Event Viewer logs?

No, it was listed under errors. The absent part is irrelevant to the problem.
