[SOLVED] Windows Vista - Distorted Audio Issue

Rather than trying to grab a driver from the Realtek site, you need to go to Sony's site and grab the correct driver for you model of Vaio. Or, if like my Acer's, the manufacturer allowed you to make a driver disk, find that and install the audio driver from the CD.

Your one screenshot show speaker/HP. I'm not sure if that means it is a driver for HewlettPackard or high power (too many of the same letters stand for different things :noidea: ).

I don't have VGA showing. Under Display in Device Manager, I have Intel HD Graphics.

hello plodr, thanks for your message.
this is a bit confusing for me. I went to realtek because one of your colleagues here suggested to get a driver from there, which didn´t work. sony support does not show an updated audio driver for this model. of course, I could re-install the original one from there. what do you think?

yes, my graphics driver has a triangle next to it. should I uninstall and reboot?

Yes - reinstall the original.

The problem here is the age of the system It must be at least 10 years old and device manufactures are simply not updating drivers for Vista and even Windows 7 any longer. They're focusing on Windows 10 and somewhat on Windows 8.1.

In short, there may be no updated audio drivers for your system.

A reinstall of Vista may be called for, but if memory serves, you did that last in 2015.

hi jcgriff2, thanks for your message and suggestion to reinstall original driver.
to confirm, your suggestion refers to graphics adapter with yellow triangle, audio driver... or both?

Ok, so I installed the original Realtek audio driver for this model from Sony support.

Situation update:

On WiFi (17 Mbps) the online audio distortion issue remains unchanged.
When connected via Ethernet cable (42 Mbps), streaming audio plays back normally.

What should I do next to resolve this?

Thank you!

I don't know what to tell you at this point outside of reinstalling Windows and see if that helps.

You have an old system on your hands (my guess - about 10 years old) that device manufacturers are not updating drivers for any longer. I would think that an audio driver update would solve this (just an educated guess), but none are available.

If the site has motherboard drivers, install those.

If nothing changes after installing motherboard drivers then it looks like either a rwally old restore point, if one is available or a reinstall of Windows.

It will probably say Chipset driver and the vendor will either be Intel or AMD.
Of course you'll select Intel if Sony makes your model with 2 different chipsets.

Ok plodr, so I found and installed original chipset from sony. made no difference in audio issue.
since the issue is only on wireless (16Mbps) and not on LAN (42Mbs), I thought I´d try reinstalling the Wireless adapter and see if that would help.

But that didn´t go over well.

Even after several reboots, the Wifi driver doesn´t load.

error 31.

and below is another entry OTHER DEVICES with a question mark and not much else.
See Screenshot above.

I do not have older restore points.

If I can get the Wifi going again that would be great. Any ideas?

p.s.: I am not sure what your specialty is, can you help me find a new computers when I am ready for it
and I give you the parameters and budget?

Your very first post said
Issue persists the same with headset, external speaker and built-in speakers.

Then in post # 7
the distortion happens in online audio/video.
in offline video playback there is no sound at all.
You fixed the offline issue because you then stated later
audio distortion in online video playback
as the only problem.

the issue is only on wireless (16Mbps) and not on LAN (42Mbs)
You failed to mention this fact until post #30! So you aren't dealing with an audio driver problem. It is a wireless issue instead.

Under network adapters, all you are showing is the ethernet, you have no wireless at all.

What wireless device? Something like Ralink, Realtek, Atheros, Qualcomm

You need to go to Sony's site again and get the correct wireless driver for you model of Vaio.

Hi Plodr, you are right. The explanation is simple: When I first posted about the audio issue, I was on wireless only. So I suspected audio driver issue. I didn´t realize the difference in streaming audio performance until later, when I had access to Ethernet connection.

And that´s when I posted a corresponding update here.
In fact, I mention it first in post 25.

As you noted, there is no wireless adapter now.
The explanation why that is so is in post 30.

You tell me to install a wireless driver. Great idea! Would love to.
But do not KNOW HOW.
See my earlier post about Intel Wireless adapter not loading? Error 31.

Can you help me fix that ? Thank you.

I will keep trying until I get more instructions.

@plodr: installing original wlan driver from sony failed, again.

error message "a newer product is already installed".

(as seen in my earlier screenshot no wlan driver shows in device manager)

After original wlan driver install from sony support failed, I went to add hardware and selected one from there.
now it shows up but doesn´t work, error 31. ( see screenshots ). checking for solutions button does not work, either.

can you help me resolve this error 31 and get wlan going again?

thank you very much!

I'm pretty sure the Intel wireless driver is the wrong thing. I have an Intel chip in my netbook and the wireless driver is not Intel. (Mine is Qualcomm Atheros). Uninstall that Intel thing and try to install Realtek again - if you are positive the wireless is Realtek. If it doesn't work, I don't know what to tell you.
You either have to plug the laptop in if you want to listen to audio, download what you want or listen on a supported device. (Vista hasn't been patched since April and with all the nasty stuff on the internet, it's better to use a patched device on the internet).

It also bother me that you have Network Controller with a problem. That could be related.

can you help me resolve this error 31 and get wlan going again?
Probably not. If you can't get the correct driver from Sony to install.

This link is for US. Start here, Sony eSupport - Drivers & Software Updates - Select a Model
and click Detect my model. Perhaps it will download the drivers that are missing.

First of all, thank you very much for your persistence in attempting to resolve this issue.
I very much appreciate your time and attention to this matter.

Wlan driver positively Intel. sony support for this model has only this Intel wlan driver. The situation and what happened when I tried to install the original and those on the machine (via add hardware) is outlined in posts 33 and 34 above, with screenshots. ( Audio driver is Realtek. Maybe that´s why you figured Wlan driver is Realtek. It is not )

I also believe the network controller issue is related, will try the path you suggest and report in next post.

plodr, can you help with this, not sure which of the four lines under hardware ID: value
holds the relevant information to check for a driver on the site you mention? and did you
mean to put that info into which box on the website...vendor or device or ?

thank you!

Hello plodr,

thank you very much for guiding me to a solution for the wireless adapter issue.
intel driver update went well. wifi works again. great!
:beerchug2:

previous device manager entry "other devices" ( network controller with yellow triangle ) has disappeared.
(see screenshot below ).

audio distortion issue remains even after wlan adapter update.

what else can I try to resolve this?ideas?
