Realtek HD Audio on-board GA-EX58-UD5 no longer working

I recently had an issue with my system, and was forced to uninstall software for a no longer present Creative Audigy 2 ZS soundcard, as I had long been using the Realtek HD Audio (on-board). After uninstall, I was left with only the Realtek software and drivers. However, my audio stopped working, and so I started trouble shooting. Firstly I checked if it was hardware, by logging into a second Boot OS (Windows 7 RC) that was still on the machine, and the sound was working fine from that installation.

Coming back to my current OS (Windows 7 Ultimate SP1), I sourced the motherboard driver CD, removed the driver, restarted and then installed from the M/B disk. No joy. I then tried the same technique with the latest drivers from the Gigabyte website for my device. Still no joy. I have read several forums for information, and disable all sound effects in enhancements with in properties in audio playback devices. I have disabled audio in bios and then re-enabled, and still no joy. If I try to configure the playback device, the test sound reports and error stating failed to play test tone. I have checked that it is the default playback device by the way, and can see that it is the only driver installed in Device Manager against the Sound cards section.

I am as how to resolve this, and would appreciate any help you could provide at resolving this situation, as I am adamant that this is something that does not require a rebuild, and there must be a way to fix this. Am happy to go through all steps again!

Much appreciated in advance!

Thanks zcomputerwiz, I had tried that as well, but did so again, and it is still reporting as failed to play test tone in playback devices configuration. Driver reports as working correctly and no issues in Device Manager.

Does the "what device did you plug in" box pop up when you plug a cable into the speaker or line out connectors?

Are 'speakers' set as the default audio device? Does the sound check from the Realtek Audio Manager work?
Make sure that nothing is muted or turned down too low in the audio mixer.

Yes, speaker are set to default audio device. Sound check from Realtek Audio Manager doesn't work. Nothing is muted or turned down too low, everything is at least 50% volume, and speakers are maxed out.

When you disabled and enabled the device in the BIOS did you change the type from AC97 to HD Audio or anything similar?

Make sure the following services are running with startup type set to automatic:
Power
Plug and Play
Multimedia Class Scheduler
Windows Audio
Windows Audio Endpoint Builder

Are there any messages in event viewer stating that a particular service failed to start / terminated unexpectedly or something along those lines?

Thanks for persisting with this problem. All services are started and set to automatic. Event Viewer does not show any service control events with errors, apart from LogMeIn Kernel Information Provider service, which I no longer use, and the EpsonBidirectionalService service also has an error.

Have you tried disabling front port detection and manually setting the device type (speakers, headphones) for the port you are plugged into?
Also, have you tried running SFC /scannow from an elevated command prompt?

Yes, disabled and re-enabled front port detection. Both methods didn't make a difference. Manually set device type to headphone or speakers for port plugged into. I've tested the cable into the headphone jack on my phone and it does playback sound, as it did via Windows 7 RC connection, so not a speaker issue. Again do value the advice even if I have taken most the steps, as it could be the smallest thing that I could have missed. But I always double check before giving a response in case anything changes physically. There are many forums discussing similar issue, but no-one has had a resolution to date. All I can think of is that a hotfix could be causing the issue, but no idea how to narrow it down without uninstalling a ton of hotfixes, or rebuilding machine.

The "failed to play test tone" is a clue, from what I can gather it might be corrupted system files.
From an elevated command prompt, type sfc /scannow and press ENTER.

When that completes, attach C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log with your reply.

Hi, I think you've nailed the problem on the head. I just spent Sunday with another sysnative expert trying to resolve System Update Readiness corruption, and CheckSUR.log is now clear of any errors. I forgot to go back and check SFC. Please find sfc.txt attached and let me know how I can resolve this errors.
