Hi all,

Win 8 on my computer is unable to complete several updates.
Win 8.1 is in store. I have tried to upgrade 8 to 8.1 , but it is suggested that I should to complete some important updates before jumping to 8.1

While on the update process, Win 8 keeps providing error code 0x800703f1.

I have googled a lot and found that this situation is linked to a corruption of the configuration registry database.

Please, attached to this message is a copy of the CBS.log.

So, here is my question: how to overcome this problem and recover a clean registry,in order to complete win 8 updates and jump to win 8.1 ?

Please, your help is of great interest for me. Thanks in advance.

Re: Windows 8 -update failures - error code 0x800703f1 / Registry database is corrupt

Hello Go The Power (Moderator) :),

Many thanks for your prompt reply in connection with the above thread.

Based on suggestions, I did the following :

Ran SFC / Scannow . Result : Windows resource protection could not perform the reqested operation.

Furthermore, I ran the System Update Readiness Tool
(DISM / online /cleanup-image /scanHealth) with this result : The configuration registry database is corrupt.

Attached, please you will find a zipped CBS text file.

I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Best regards.

Hello Jelanfoot

Thanks for that. Can you please run SFC again (it will fail again) and upload the CBS log again? What I am looking for is at what point it fails at.

Thanks

Alex

Hi Alex,

Thanks very much. Your reply provides me with a full hope...

As you suggested, I have run SFC /Scannow once more.

Please, below is the requested new CBS.log after running the SFC /Scannow.

Hello Jelanfo,

Code:
2014-09-17 22:55:32, Info CBS Failed to load the COMPONENTS hive from 'C:\WINDOWS\System32\config\COMPONENTS' into registry key 'HKLM\COMPONENTS'. [HRESULT = 0x800703f1 - ERROR_BADDB]
2014-09-17 22:55:32, Info CBS Failed to load component store [HRESULT = 0x800703f1 - ERROR_BADDB]

This is the point that is failing. What I would like to do is to take a look at the COMPONENTS hive.

SFCFix Collect COMPONENTS
  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download SFCFixScript.txt, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFixScript.txt - do not rename it.
  3. On your Desktop, you should now see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFixScript.txt.
  4. Drag the file SFCFixScript.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  5. SFCFix will now begin to upload your CBS logfiles to our server.
  6. Upon completion, a log should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  7. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this into your next post for me to analyse please - put [CODE][/CODE] tags around the log to break up the text.

If all goes well, you should see that your logfiles have now been added to your thread.

Hello Jelanfoot,

Sorry to say this, I have some bad news for you. Looking at the COMPONENTS hive it can not be loaded. I have had a look over the values set on the hive to try and work out what would be stopping it from opening but did not have any luck. When I get some free time I can have another look, but cases like this are not fixed normally. This sort of corruption normally results in a fresh reinstall of Windows. What I recommend from here is that you back up all your important files, in case this is the path that we need to go down.

Hi,

Since it could no be possible right now to overcome the problem with this famous corruption of registry database,
I finally decided for and completed a new clean Win8 install.

Thereafter, I pushed Win8 away and performed a win8.1 upgrade.
All is now OK. I really enjoy my laptop in its new situation.

I would to thanks all those who helped to understand what was going wrong with my machine. For sure I have learned a lot in this incredible forum.

Special thanks to Go The Power.

For sure, I'll be back with other unavoidable IT problems.

Best regards,

Jelanfoot (John - Canada)

Sorry that it had to come to that, John. But with issues like this there is not any other options.

If you have any other options feel free to return :)
