GUIDE: MSDTC.log corruption (Error 800700A1 when installing KB3000850)

There have seen countless issues with file MSDTC.log being corrupt on Windows 8 machines. When this file is corrupt it will stop the installation of KB3000850 with a common error of 0x800700a1. Looking inside the CBS log (for advanced users) you will notice the following error:

To fix this file corruption please follow the steps below:

  1. Right click on the

    button
  2. Click on Command prompt (Admin) => Press Yes on the prompt
  3. Inside the Command Prompt windows copy and paste the following command SFC /SCANNOW
  4. Please wait for this to Finish before continuing with rest of the steps.

Once SFC /SCANNOW has completed, please continue:

  1. Download SFCFix.exe and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  3. Double click on SFCFix.exe to open it.
  4. Follow all on screen instructions and upon completion.
Once SFCFix has completed you should have a text file pop up called SFCFix.txt, if this doesn't open automatically please go to your desktop and open SFCFix.txt.

Inside the results screen you should have something similar to:

Before continuing its is Extremely important that your SFCFix result matches the above result in BLUE, if it does NOT, stop here and start a new thread in this forum following the instructions outlined here: Windows Update Forum Posting Instructions

Following the steps below will repair corruption C:\Windows\winsxs\amd64_microsoft-windows-com-dtc-runtime_31bf3856ad364e35_6.3.9600.16384_none_0a1162f033fa01f6\MSDTC.LOG

Warning: this fix is specific to the above file ONLY. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download View attachment SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put [CODE][/CODE] tags around the log to break up the text.

Once complete you should have a similar result to:

Can you please re-upload the SFCFix.zip file again as the link is not working, or you can share the script here.

The script isn't hosted on Sysnative, but on Go The Power's website which seems down. I'll send him a PM so he can check it out.

The SFCFix.zip can now be downloaded, and is now hosted on Sysnative directly, so it won't be going away anytime soon.
