Hi - I hope someone here can help me.

A few weeks ago my laptop stopped booting up and asked me to back-up my data as the hard disk was dying.
I managed to copy all my partitions to my desktop using PARAGON, but the disk drive totally died soon afterwards.
So I put in a new disk drive and, using Paragon, recovered my partitions.
Much to my surprise Windows 7 booted up after a long disk check, with LOADS of errors.
Everything seemed OK and all my files and programs seemed to be working. Windows updated all by itself, Word, Excel, Outlook, my HP printer - everything seems fine. But it was short lived, when I use IE or FireFox they constantly lock up on certain sites (for example downloading Chrome).

I did a full CHKDSK but no more errors. I then attempted a SFC /SCANNOW in safe mode.
And again in my normal boot-up using "run as administrator" and I did it MANY TIMES.
But it keeps failing, then I found this web site - HELP??????

I did a SCANFIX and will attach the logs as requested (and the CBS logs) - AS SOON AS I FIGURE OUT HOW.
I should add here that I was unable to load my System Disk when ScanFix asked me to, as I do not have that DVD.
I found a Windows 7 Home Premium ISO on The PirateBay - but I was a bit worried about downloading that.
Microsoft use to provide the DVD online for free, but that page now asks me for a code and the OEM one does not work.

Thanks.

Here is my SFCFix log.

And my SFC logs - the C:\WINDOWS\Logs\CBS folder, zipped as requested.

Image1.jpg

Tried to upload it but too big (I think).

So uploading just the CBS.log - blast that's too big as well.

:banghead:

I'LL BE BACK!

Thanks for moving this Tekno Venus .
I was going to put it there as it had a lot of SFC errors, but I was a bit wary as it's not after an update.
I think I lost / damaged the files when my HDD failed.
Hope someone here can help me.

Sorry for the delay. This may take a few rounds of fixing. Please do the following.

Step#1 - SFCFix Script
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop. If you still have this on your desktop from downloading previously, you don't need to re-download.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please

Step#2 - SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

Items for your next post
1. SFCFix.txt
2. CBS.txt

Thank you BrianDrab.

I'm running the SFC /SCANNOW and will post that in a minute or two.

Please note that I tried a few things while waiting (sorry).
I run the SCFfix several times and inserted a newly downloaded Win7 DVD when it asked.
I also read somewhere that a CCleaner registry clean could help so I did that as well.
NOTHING HELPED.

Thanks for your time and effort.

I also read somewhere that a CCleaner registry clean could help so I did that as well.

The usefulness of cleaning the registry is highly overrated and can be dangerous. In most cases, using a cleaner to remove obsolete, invalid and erroneous entries does not affect system performance but it can result in "unpredictable results". Unless you have a particular problem that requires a registry edit to correct it, (and you are expert in the registry), I would suggest you leave the registry alone.

We fixed some corruption which is good. Please now do the following.

Step#1 - System Update Readiness Tool (SUR)
1. Download and run the following file.
2. When it asks you if you wish to install, please answer yes. Note: It could take 15 minutes or more to run. Please don't cancel.
3. You will get an Installation Complete screen when it's done running.
4. Please attach the log from the following location. C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log
Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

I totally agree with what you say about registry cleaners, but as no one was helping and I thought that I was going to need a "factory reset" I had nothing to loose. I did however make a couple of registry backups beforehand.

I installed that link and here is a copy of the CheckSUR.txt - is that the one you want?

Yes, that was the file I needed. Please do the following.

Step#1 - Fix Corrupt Files
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.
  1. Please download the attached file, Packs.zip and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Right-click on the file and select Extract All...
  3. Tick the box labelled Show extracted files when complete then click Extract
  4. A window will open showing two folders, Manifests and Packages
  5. Open the Manifests folder and copy the files into the following folder (if there are any files). If the Manifests folder doesn't exist within Winsxs you will need to create it.
    C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Winsxs\Manifests
  6. Open the Packages folder and copy the files into the following folder (if there are any files). If the Packages folder doesn't exist within Servicing you will need to create it.
    C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Servicing\Packages
  7. Run the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) again.
  8. When the SURT finishes installing, zip up and attach the following log file:
    C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log

Thanks again BrianDrab

Awesome. Four more to fix.

  2. Download SFCFix.zip and save this to your Desktop.

1. SFCFix.txt
2. CBS.txt

Thanks BrianDrab.

I never realised there were so many problems.
By the way IE and Firefox are no longer crashing all the time - the original problem after replacing the HDD.

Here is the SFCFix log, I will start step 2 now and post that log.

This update contains the following two manifests that are occasionally updated by the Diagnostic Tracking Service:

telemetry.ASM-WindowsDefault.json
utc.app.json

The two files are marked as static files in the update. When an advanced user runs the System File Checker Tool (sfc.exe), the files are unintentionally flagged as corrupted. There is no impact or corruption on a device that is running this update, and this issue will be fixed in a later service update.

BRILLIANT
My face dropped when I saw more errors appear.

Thank you so much for all your excellent help.
I was not looking forward to reinstalling Windows and then ALL my devices, software, settings and tweaks. not to mention Windows updates.
Back to using my good laptop and not the crummy old one.

Sod's law I've just noticed an invitation for Windows 10 - would that have solved all my damaged files?
Mind you it's just an invitation, so I would have been without this laptop for weeks or even months.

Once again THANK YOU for all your help.

PS
How on earth did you learn to do this?
Any hints where to start, things to read, online courses......

No problem at all. If you're interested in Windows 10 you can get it free if you fill out your email on the invitation (if your machine will support it). It comes out at the end of July. Not sure if it would have fixed your damaged files or not. I wouldn't want to upgrade my OS with known issues however.

As far as learning this stuff, there is a school here. If it's something you are interested in you can get in contact with niemiro or Go The Power. We are always looking for good helpers. Take care.
