Can't update, all have code 80073712

As said above, I can't apply any Windows Updates whatsoever. Whether I try it normally or the manual downloads, they fail with code 80073712.

I've been working on it for about a week now, to no avail, and will attempt to recall all the varying things I've already tried. The Windows Update Fixit does nothing for me, even on aggressive mode. The System File Checker finds no errors. The SURT finds 33, but cannot fix them (more on that later). I renamed that one windows file so that the component store could be rebuilt, which also had no effect. I cannot run an in-place repair install, because my version of Windows is now newer than the version on the disk (this is Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, by the way). And I can't seem to download a newer image from Windows, because it says that my version is not available in the language I've specified (which is English, so this makes no sense). I also, in my desperation, tried to go ahead and update to the current most stable build of Windows 10, but that gets the same error as the Windows Updates (which I likely should have seen coming).

I really, really want to find a solution that isn't a complete wipe and reinstall. All I can get here is DSL, which gives me a maximum download speed of 180 kb per second... and I would have to download more than a terabyte to replace what I would lose. One doesn't have to do the math to understand what a nightmare that would be.

Below I will attach both the CBS file and the SFCFix file (which I ran after the SFC and the SURT, so that data should be well up to date, I hope). I am for now skipping the CheckSUR log, as it wasn't listed in the posting instructions, and unless I'm sorely mistaken that same data will be in the SFCFix log.

Thank you for any efforts made here.

Edit: Oh, I've also checked the statuses of the various needed services, and they are all either Automatic or Automatic (Delayed Start).

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. As an FYI, if you uninstall Service Pack 1 from your machine you will be able to use your DVD to do a repair install. That may be the quickest route to fixing. More info here. If you can't for some reason then please go ahead and attach the CheckSUR.log.

Thanks.

The SURT finds 33, but cannot fix them (more on that later).
You mentioned this but I don't see any errors from your SURT log?

Please do the following (even if you have done it previously). I want a fresh log.

SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

Hmm. I was mistaken. I re-checked the logs attached to the first post, and it was SFC that found the errors, apparently (from the SFCFix log).

I'm actually a bit confused by that, as when I do run the system file checker it says that it finds no problems (more specifically: no integrity violations). Yet the SFCFix sources the 33 errors it lists to SFC. I don't know what to make of that, if anything.

Oh, and yet another thing I forgot to mention in the initial post: I did also try multiple instances of System Restore, and they too fail.

Anyway, new CBS attached.

When you go to Windows Update, please provide me with one update (KB??????) that is listed to install. I want to focus on just one. Thank you.

OK, here's what we do.

1. Download KB3045645 and save it to your desktop. From this point forward we will use this downloaded file for our installs instead of Windows Update.
2. Go ahead and attempt to install this update from the downloaded file.
3. When it fails, please zip up the following logs and send my way.

C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

If any of them are too large to attach to the forum (larger than around 7Mb), you may upload to SendSpace and just provide the link.

Thank you. Now we have something to work with. You have registry corruption. We need to resolve the following issue. I will need to get a copy of your COMPONENTS hive in order to do so. Please follow the instructions below.

Code:
2015-06-09 02:11:53, Error CSI 000003c9@2015/6/9:07:11:53.245 (F) d:\win7sp1_gdr\base\wcp\componentstore\storelayout.cpp(11690): Store corruption detected in function ComponentStore::CRawStoreLayout::CheckFamilyIndexForDeadWinnerComponent expression: (null)

1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and copy the file named COMPONENTS to your desktop.
2. Zip up this file and upload to SendSpace and just provide me with the link.

Thank you.

Thank you. Please do the following.

Step#1 - SFCFix Script
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.
  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop. If you still have this on your desktop from downloading previously, you don't need to re-download.
  2. Download the file below, SFCScript.txt, and save this to your Desktop.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCScript.txt.
  5. Drag the file SFCScript.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please

Step#2 - Try the Update
1. Download KB3045645 and save it to your desktop (You can just use the one that was already downloaded).
2. Go ahead and attempt to install this update from the downloaded file.
3. If it fails, please zip up the following log and send my way.

C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

It's showing the same issue. I feel this is fixable but I think I need a copy of two of your hives now. Please do the following.

Retrieve Components/Software Hives

  • Please download the Freeware RegBak from here: Acelogix Software - Download products
You will find it at the bottom of the page that the link brings you to.
  • Go ahead and install this program and accept all the defaults. After the last install screen the program should open.
  • Click the New Backup button. Accept the defaults and simply click Start.
  • When it says Finished successfully, click the Close button.
  • This will bring you back to the main screen of the program. You will see one entry in this list with the date that you did it. Right-click on this line-item and select Explore Backup...
  • This will bring you into the folder where the backup was made. You should see a Users folder and a Windows folder along with a couple other files. Double-click on the Windows folder to open it. Then open the System32 folder and then config folder. You should see around 6 files in here, two of which are named COMPONENTS and SOFTWARE.
  • Copy these two files to your Desktop. If the COMPONENTS file does not exist, please fetch it instead from C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS.
  • Now right click on these files on your desktop and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Then please upload the zip file(s) to your favourite file sharing website (it will be too big to upload here). Examples of services to upload to are Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and then just provide the link in your reply.
  • You can close any open windows you have as well as the RegBack program now.

Thank you. Please do the following.
