What is happening to my PC:

  • Programs such as Google Chrome, Firefox, and Adobe Reader routinely stop responding
  • Applications won't open or come to the front after being minimized to the toolbar

Steps I have taken:

  • I have run (as administrator) sfc /scannow multiple times, all resulting in the following message

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log %WinDir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log.

  • I have run (as administrator) dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth multiple times, always resulting in the following message, and even after restarting and running sfc /scannow, it still outputs the same message (written above)

The restore operation completed successfully. The component store corruption was repaired.

  • I have run SFCFix.exe which output the following:

SFCFix version 2.4.5.0 by niemiro.
Start time: 2015-11-08 23:26:33.871
Microsoft Windows 8.1 Update 3 - amd64
Not using a script file.

I am working on uploading CBS.zip, it is 16.2MB and I'm not sure if that is a problem.

Note: I made the mistake of posting a thread before reading how to. I am working on deleting that and I apologize for it.

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. Let's start with the following.

Step#1 - SFCFix Script
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop. If you still have this on your desktop from downloading previously, you don't need to re-download.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please

Step#2 - SFC Scan
1. Right-click on the Start
w8start.png
button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter
sfc /scannow

3. Once it finishes, copy and paste the following into the command-prompt window and press Enter.
copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"

4. Once this has completed please go to your Desktop and you will find CBS.txt => Right-click on this file and choose Send To...Compressed (zipped folder). Please upload this zipped file CBS.zip to this thread

Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

here is the cbs.zip: https://www.dropbox.com/s/tyhdnpcvwnp1c5b/cbs.zip?dl=0

It seems the problem is resolved? How was this accomplished?

Do I need to be wary of windows updates? Would this solution work again if I encounter a similar problem down the road?

Thank you very, very much for your help!

The corrupted file has been replaced with a good copy. It was just a shorcut that was corrupt so I doubt it has anything to do with the issues you stated in your initial post. I found a good copy from another machine, changed the permissions properly to allow the replacement, replaced it and changed the permissions back.

Do I need to be wary of windows updates? Would this solution work again if I encounter a similar problem down the road?
No you don't. It's extremely important to install critical/important updates to keep your machine secure. If you have another issue in the future related to SFC or DISM I would recommend making another post here. The helpers here go through a lot of training in order to fix these issues and every issue has the potential to be very different.

Let's do another check.

Step#1 - DISM /RestoreHealth Scan
Warning:this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Right-click on the Start
    w8start.png
button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
  2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  3. Once it finishes, copy and paste the following into the command-prompt window and press Enter. If prompted to overwrite the existing file go ahead.
    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  4. Once this has completed please go to your Desktop and you will find CBS.txt => Please zip/upload to this thread.
Please Note:: if the file is too big (over 7MB) to upload to your next post, please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

It seems you are correct, the original problems have not been resolved.

OK, now that Windows Update issues are resolved, let's take a look at some logs to see if we can figure out what is going on. Please do the following.

Step#1 - FRST Scan
1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Right click to run as administrator. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
3. Please ensure you place a check mark in the Addition.txt check box at the bottom of the form before running (if not already).
4. Press Scan button.
5. It will produce a log called FRST.txt in the same directory the tool is run from (which should now be the desktop)
6. Please copy and paste log back here.
7. Another log (Addition.txt - also located in the same directory as FRST64.exe) will be generated Please also paste that along with the FRST.txt into your reply.

Please see attached.

Thanks again :) This is a particularly inconvenient time for me so I really appreciated your swift help.

No problem. As suspected however your machine has malware/adware that needs removed. It's likely contributing to your issues. We don't do malware removal in this forum however I'm qualified to do so.

Please start a new topic in our Security forum and in the subject please put WU Thread 17707 - For BrianDrab
In the body of the thread please put a link to this thread. As soon as I'm able I will pick it up and we'll continue over there.

I'm going to mark this particular thread as resolved. See you over there.
