Hi All!

Please help fix my windows 10 installation!

A while ago my start menu stopped working and the edge icon disappeared. Soon after I couldn't launch any windows 10 apps - e.g. calc.exe. I managed to make a new administrator account and now apps and my start menu work to an extent... But not perfect (e.g. right clicking to modify startmenu doesn't do anything). I ran sfc /scannow and looked @ the CBS log which showed ~6 corrupt files in the winsxs directory. I tried manually replacing some of them but this has not really helped anything - in a last ditch effort deleted the files (figured if it caused computer to no longer boot I'd force myself to reinstall). Deleting the files didn't help (or seemingly hinder other than what looks like causing duplicate ownership issues?). I then tried 'resetting' thru windows recovery, which failed (not sure if this logs somewhere?).

Anyway - I can't get windows update to install 1511 10586 (there was a problem installing some updates...)

I've also run CC Cleaner to clear registry and disk cleanup to clear system files.

Please find attached my CBS, DSIM and SFCFIX logs

Appreciate any and all help!

Thanks in advance :)

Please find attached.

I have tried the fix suggested at https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/971058

It tells me it finds errors and 'fixes' them, but the problem pursists.

Running the commands:

net stop wuauserv
ren %SystemRoot%\SoftwareDistribution\Download DL.bak
ren %SystemRoot%\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore DS.bak
net start wuauserv

Allows windows to 'redownload' the update, but it still fails to install

I have tried CCcleaner to clear all junk and fix registry

I have tried running control panel>system>Security and maintenance>troubleshooting>fix problems with windows update, which again finds and 'fixes' errors

error.jpg

Trying to run windows setup from the 1511 10586 DVD gives me the error Setup couldn't start properly. Please reboot your PC...

I have run both windows defender and malwarebytes - both come up clean.

I have run checkdisk - clean

Looking at the CBS log I can see some errors - but I'm not knowledgeable enough to fix them on my own :)

Thanks again!

The CBS log looks OK.

As always, make sure you have a good backup of anything important before following these instructions.

***DO NOT CONTINUE IF YOU WANT TO ROLL BACK TO A PREVIOUS BUILD/VERSION OF WINDOWS!***

Let's try this:
Run Disk Cleanup: Disk cleanup in Windows 10 - Windows Help -
Click the "Clean up System Files" button.
Check the boxes for 'Previous Windows Installations" and "Temporary Windows Installation Files".
Click OK.

After Disk Cleanup finishes, try running setup from the ISO again.

Still giving the same "Setup couldn't start properly. Please reboot your PC" error.

Interestingly enough, windows defender is not struggling to stay up to date...

Any insight on the
Failed to internally open package. [HRESULT = 0x800f0805 - CBS_E_INVALID_PACKAGE] errors in the CBS log?

I should point out that I'm not getting the option to delete "Previous Windows Installations"

I have a feeling I need to delete the $Windows.~BT folder but am getting access denied errors following the instructions here: Can I delete $Windows.~BT & $Windows.~WS folders?

Yup - removed the hard drive and used another PC to delete the $Windows.~BT folder allowed me to run the 1511 10586 update but gave a "Something happened" error

Disabled Windows Defender and Windows Firewall, changed language setting to US English and re-ran the setup.exe from the mounted ISO as administrator and here I am on 1511 10586! :)

Thank you so much for helping out with the corruption :)
